K,Billy's supersound Posted 14 March, 2011 Share Posted 14 March, 2011 watched the show late kick off on bbc1 and they began by talking about the possible new youth system to be introduced into the english game. clubsbe graded into 4 tiers 1 being the top and only affordable by top prem teams. they ended the discussion with an apparant 'quote' from southampton saying that they plan to seek the top rating, great news. i know the below link is to a old article but i havn't seen it be mentioned on this forum atall. http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/paulfletcher/2011/02/football_league_fears_over_pla.html?page=
Colinjb Posted 14 March, 2011 Share Posted 14 March, 2011 A nice section on the show. Was more interested with Murty's tactical piece. Nice, succinct and nailing how we won the day... just a shame about the kung fu noise he made when detailing Gobern's red card!
Matthew Le God Posted 14 March, 2011 Share Posted 14 March, 2011 It will cost roughly £2.5 million per year to run a category 1 academy when these plans come in for 2012/13. Plus you need the facilities to get category 1 - hence the multi million pound development of Staplewood announced. There won't be very many clubs with category 1 academies, but Saints will be one of them. Those thinking the owners aren't investing really have flimsy foundations to their argument. stevegrant Posted 15 March, 2011 Share Posted 15 March, 2011 The proposed academy ruling will never come to fruition. The most interesting thing to come from Late Kickoff tonight was that on the East Anglia version, Dion Dublin claimed that Norwich have agreed a deal of up to £3m for Craig Mackail-Smith, which includes him joining them on loan immediately. If that's true, while I'd be disappointed to have missed out on signing him in the summer, it gives us a massive boost for the rest of this season that the team I see as our main rival for second place have lost their best player. Matthew Le God Posted 15 March, 2011 Share Posted 15 March, 2011 The proposed academy ruling will never come to fruition. Why do you think that Steve? It will be brought in, maybe with a few tweaks/concessions but nothing major. The Premier League academies have far more power to bring this through no matter what the Football League clubs think. Plus the FA thinks it will benefit the national team. In any case, as we are all Saints fans we should be hoping it does happen. As Saints will be one of the few clubs in England that will significantly benefit from it!
theyin Posted 15 March, 2011 Share Posted 15 March, 2011 If category 1 is NC's goal I believe that he'll get it. I'm sure someone has the figures he'll use to back up Saints argument that it is a continued and sustained provider of English players to the bigger stages and the national team. Added to the fact you sell an AOC every two years and you've paid for its upkeep and pocketed 5 mil to go into the war chest. At least now we're out of the days of selling gold and getting peanuts. While it might be good for saints, I can't see it being good for English football the top clubs will hoover up all the talent leaving the rich richer and the poor poorer so to speak. The constant attempts to widen the gap between the PL elite and everyone else is destroying football in this country. We may have the facilites but will we be able to attract the best at saints if ManU, Arsenal et al can now scour the country for the best talent? The constant attempts to widen the gap between the PL elite and everyone else is destroying football in this country. It is going to dramatically increased the number of hours England's best young players have with top coaches. At the moment is lagging behind most other top European leagues. The players will end up better, plus they will still benefit the smaller clubs by going out on loan and if deemed not good enough they will still sign for smaller clubs having had much more coaching at a higher level. We may have the facilites but will we be able to attract the best at saints if ManU, Arsenal et al can now scour the country for the best talent? Very few English clubs will get category one. Saints will be able to use their position to hoover up a lot of the regions best players (as they do already) as Saints will be more attractive and between the ages of 9 to 12 the only option in many cases for players and their parents as teams like Pompey etc will be restricted. Except alot of smaller clubs rely on devoloping and selling on talented players to keep themselves going. Now it will be much harder to find/keep hold of those special finds and sell them on meaning more hardship for clubs in the lower leagues. It's what we used to do to keep saints going in the days before swiss billionaires, if the new rules were in effect a few years ago the likes of Bale and Walcott would never have come here. Very few English clubs will get category one. Saints will be able to use their position to hoover up a lot of the regions best players as Saints will be more attractive and between the ages of 9 to 12, the only option in many cases for players and their parents as teams like Pompey etc will be restricted. But those clubs that do have categroy one will be the likes of Arse and manure who will have free reign to scour the country rather than just their local area. As much as I love saints I think if it's a toss up between say us or Arsenal most players would pick Arsenal unless they're really against moving to far from home. While that is true, those clubs also have global academies now and hoover up talent from most of the planet, so the actual number of spaces for English kids to get in are reduced. It would be interesting to see what the actual quantity numbers are for anyone academy. Sure the very very best may get sucked into the big names, but as we've seen, they miss out on many and many of their kids don't actually make it. Anything that keeps our system running and keeps us in tier 1 is great news
