Saint in Paradise Posted 25 July, 2012 Share Posted 25 July, 2012 If a car is stopped because it's not insured and the driver isn't the owner, the Police get it towed how long does the actual owner who is abroad have to rectify the no insurance charge before the car is crushed? Um Bongo Posted 25 July, 2012 Share Posted 25 July, 2012 14 days normally. You'll also pay a release fee of around £200 and a storage charge of about £20 a day for the garage to keep the car while it's waiting to be claimed. (Figures aren't exact, they vary from different garages)

WHITEE1987 Posted 25 July, 2012 Share Posted 25 July, 2012 The normal time is 14 days that is correct. The price i think is higher than £200 though. Also the daily charge is more like £40 to £50 a day. Thats how the towing companies make their money on ya.

Should be a statutory fee and after a couple of days storage will be charged at £22 per day, this should be uniform throughout the country. I also don't think it is subject to VAT. To collect the car full documents have to be produced.
stu0x Posted 22 August, 2012 Share Posted 22 August, 2012 Seizures for no insurance are governed by the Road Traffic Act 1988 and Regs 2005. If a vehicle has been seized under s165A and the seizure notice served, it will say on the notice how long you have to reclaim it. It will vary depending on the Force area, but some will give as little as 7 working days before its disposed with. If the registered keeper is out of the county or otherwise indisposed you can nominate someone else to collect the vehicle, providing they are properly insured.
