sadoldgit Posted 3 March, 2015 Share Posted 3 March, 2015 Playing in a time when players were as hard as nails, one of the true tough guys. Terrific player too. RIP.

jjsaint Posted 4 March, 2015 Share Posted 4 March, 2015 Just looking at pictures of Mackay, even when he's smiling, scares the sh*t out of me.
OldNick Posted 4 March, 2015 Share Posted 4 March, 2015 It is quite a thing when a footballer who you grew up hearing about as a kid passes away. Time rolls on. one of the tough good men of football RIP
Whitey Grandad Posted 4 March, 2015 Share Posted 4 March, 2015 I remember seeing him play at White Hart Lane in the 60s at the end of his career. 'Old barrel-chestie' I think they called him, but what a great character he was. He dominated the midfield. Rest In Peace, big man.

Great picture which captures perfectly the public images on both Dave Mackay and Bremner. There was a copy in the front window of Dave MacKay Ties shop in Winchmore Hill. Players of today have got athletic quality and technical ability but back in the 60s and 70s we had true characters. Players like Mackay could play but they could also run through brick walls. The players of today may think they are tough but back then all players were hard as nails. Even "flair" players like George Best and Rod Marsh would kick lumps out of defenders and trade punches. It was a mans game then. We have a bunch of very talented players now but they really are a bunch of wusses.
