Gis Posted 10 August, 2017 Posted 10 August, 2017 What makes a GREAT club ? Love the current 'Big Issue' story. Definitely a worthy cause for the Club, Community, and the Players to be involved in things like this. Congratulations to the Club who have come up with some really novel ideas over recent years, as well as keeping up with the tried and tested !
Saint Garrett Posted 10 August, 2017 Posted 10 August, 2017 BIG or GREAT? Two very different things, I think we are a great club, but we're not a big club.
Gis Posted 10 August, 2017 Author Posted 10 August, 2017 BIG or GREAT? Two very different things, I think we are a great club, but we're not a big club. Yep agreed. So why don't most people get this, there is a massive difference between Big and Great. Anyway, pleased I support a great (and also pretty big) club.
Lighthouse Posted 10 August, 2017 Posted 10 August, 2017 Big is pretty much the most meaningless phrase in football. Try telling Liverpool they aren't as big as Man City or Chelsea and see what they say. It's just a generic term used to cover trophies won in the past, stadium capacity, size of the city, wealth of the owner, recent league position, famous past players etc. depending on who happens to be arguing.
ericb Posted 10 August, 2017 Posted 10 August, 2017 I think despite most peoples arguments on football forums and in real life everyone roughly knows the size of clubs and in many ways it's not actually to do with success as much as perceived size. For example are Chelsea bigger than Arsenal, United and Liverpool. Of course not. Are the Skates bigger than us, of course not. Are Sunderland bigger than Newcastle? Probably not. Are Wolves bigger than Villa, again of course not. Everyone knows roughly the size, there's a few mentalists of course, the type the argue Saints are bigger than Everton, or Brighton fans claiming they're somehow bigger than Palace, but the truth is the football hierarchy for most goes back to about the 60s and beyond that's only really a handful of people that remember much of it.
Tony F Posted 11 August, 2017 Posted 11 August, 2017 Everyone knows roughly the size, there's a few mentalists of course, the type the argue Saints are bigger than Everton, ...... Such mentalists (as you say) really don't appreciate the value of introducing dug-outs..... There is simply no way we could ever overcome such a handicap regardless of league position, trophies won, wealth, stadium capacity or anything. The die is cast. We must just accept the inevitable of being forever in Everton's shadow.
