Charlie Wayman Posted September 3 Posted September 3 The first match at The Dell was played on 3rd September 1898. It was a Southern League Division One game between Southampton and Brighton United. A crowd of 6,500 attended the match. Southampton won 4 – 1 Key moments: the first goal was scored by Watty Keay following some fine setup play by Tom Smith Southampton scorers: Abe Hartley, Jim McKenzie, Tom Smith Roddy Mcleod scored Brighton United's only goal the Mayor of Southampton ceremonially kicked off the match Shortly after Brighton fell behind, their midfielder Willie McArthur was injured (a kick to the jaw) and had to be hospitalised. Brighton earned some praise for their efforts! 7

Badger Posted September 3 Posted September 3 Saw reference on local news (Midlands) tonight that 3rd Sept is 125th Anniversary of opening The Hawthorns for West Brom. (Also the day war was announced in 1939) 1
