portable hard drive

Would we be correct in assuming that you're using a Windows operating system?

I don't think that's the issue. I've, coincidentally, just backed up some of my music, videos and pictures onto a cheap, Asda 320gb portable hard-drive (USB driven) with no issues at all.

just got me a 320gb portable hard drive...trouble is, my computer does not "see it"....how do I resolve this..?

cheers..

A few of the larger HDD's now do not appear as a drive letter as mass storage. The thing to do is right click the my computer icon, goto manage and then goto Disk Management. The drive should appear there, all you need to do then is mark as active and create a logical drive or extended drive depending on your requirements. Once that has been done just format it and away you go.

Hope this helps, let me know.

How much did you pay Ponty? As i am considering getting one.

Thanks,

Col.

500 GB from ASDA is about £75 at the moment. You can buy a 1TB online for the same or even less.

I believe the portable 320gb one (with USB power lead as well as transfer) was £65, and the 500gb one with a 240v supply lead was £75.

The portable one was a good price (at the time of buying) but the 'static' one was a bit expensive.

It's definatley a power issue. You're not using the cable it came with are you. You should have a usb cable that has one connection to the drive but TWO to the computer, this then provides it with enough juice to keep the drive powered, and not lose power (which is what is happening at the moment). A powered USB hub mayb not even be enough, you need that original cable to double up on power.
