Is there anyone out there who is happy to watch another dire season whilst this crazy experiment continues? I find it really condescending that Martin talks to the fans about being patient. If I was paid what he is, I would be prepared to be patient instead of paying to watch this shit. I have played and watched football for decades I think I know what good football and bad football looks like. I see zero progress and see him trying to deflect responsibility by saying it’s going to take time…strap in it’s going to be bumpy… not sure how long 5his will take…etc etc he seems to be happy clappy that the team love what they are doing. I bet they do. No consequence to poor performance. Have I slept through the moment where teams are given points for possession instead of goals scored vs goals conceded. as for the owners. They have bought for future value not current performance if they are driving this shit show any manager would be hard pushed to be successful.

The only reason it looks good in training is that they are playing against themselves. Shocking again. What is his excuse this time. Team tired. Injuries. Negative crowd. Bit unlucky. Making good progress. Etc etc. wankers hope the crowd gives him some real shit second half

I think the main problem is that we have decided that we want to be a city type side and whoever the manager is will need to comply with this. Fundamentally this football style doesn’t suit us, and can’t be executed successfully here at saints, because the step of having football competency and sound foundations are missing and will take a generation now to develop. Who knows where we would bottom out before or (if) it can be achieved. This problem is then compounded by the wish for this to be done with a team of young players that can be developed and sold for a fortune and then the cycle is reworked with incoming players making a smooth transition in without impacting performance. The theory is that whilst all this is going on we are challenging for top 6 prem position that showcases how great we are and how brilliant this theory is being executed. We are in this experiment and have been for a few years so far. I see no progress and getting worse if anything. step 1 of this needs to be train the team in football fundamentals and get them playing together. Unfortunately we have fast forwarded to step 5 advanced football style… A right shit show for a long time to come. Unless we go to step 1

I would like to know what he thinks needs to change for Ipswich game. I fear it’s nothing. I think he believes that keep playing this way will get better on its own and it’s the lack of familiarity with playing this way that’s the issue. I really can’t decide which players have skills and which do not. They are so far off playing what I think football is that I’m struggling to see any clear firm positives to build on.

It’s like watching kids football with nobody wanting to play defence. mr Cliche calls them bumps in the road. I call it a complete lack of defensive nous. They do not have a clue about football defence basics and positioning. If he thinks he can ignore these basics and say it’s going to take time for the project to work I think he is very naive. poor organisation, poor positioning, poor decisions, poor basic passing, tackling, heading skills absolutely nothing good about our basic football foundations.

Possession is one element of football. I don’t see a defensive strategy or an attacking strategy. We seem clueless in these two essential bits of football, and this has been our main problem for a few years now. We seem to have identified individuals based on numbers and not how these can blend into a team… so what we see is a group of individuals that are not bad in possession. Martin and his team seem to be training them in more and more possession only. I think we had 67% in first half if I saw correctly. Watching is just so frustrating. Plodding passes for the sake of it and long periods of time wasted if you happen to be chasing a game. Like all the comments above the project ,the process the club have lost the football plot. I bet Sunderland were pissing themselves at HT. the quality of the individuals is clearly high so we will gain points but can’t see how we are going to get consistency without something really fundamental changing

Best keeper in league…if we didn’t have him I would want to sign him …..

He is going to come into a club where there is change on every front. It’s not a straight forward thing to do however good a coach he is. I think Strachan had the personality to pull people together and manage both up and down. He will need to the same. As fans our short term memories are bad. Not his fault but he will need to build a rapport that enables him the time he needs. Imagine he comes in and loses his first 3 home games. This was something I think Ralph did well and bought Ralph time giving him credit when things got bad. reading through above, everyone wants him to be successful, but I think our worries are that we all recognise that whoever comes in it’s not an easy gig, as we have been so far off good for far too long. I just hope we can stop trying to be groundbreakers on all fronts and get back to doing the simple football things well.

I’m not sure why we have to be experimental with a manager it just feels like an unnecessary risk. With the business model of developing and selling on, is he the best available manager at developing whilst creating high performance? They have to be pretty sure that the combination of great development and great performances happens. I think it’s another roll of the dice by them. New young team, new manager for us, new league, 🤞🏻

All the stats flying around…does anyone have one for the percentage of back or sideways passes. Bet we are top of this league

Love Letter to Southampton Football Club
saint michael replied to Guided Missile's topic in The Saints
I was a little younger but loved watching Paine and Sydenham. 67 was my first game -
I’m not sure we would have. I think the lunatics (players) started to run the asylum with him in charge. All those rumours of them telling board to change him out. Also think we had started to see the lazy couldn’t care less performances on the pitch which he couldn’t arrest. Add in to that the youngsters and two bad manager choices coming in and the dye was cast.

Same shit different day. could write this after every game im more worried about the feeling on here that we will bounce straight back. Think we are in for a hell of a wake up call
-
They are all completely shot. I’m not sure how they can turn this around at beginning of next year. Different year but very tough teams. Bella lost one and just stopped early in game and AMN wanders around shocking

It’s not untrue.. it’s my opinion. I’ve never met a businessman that thinks he will plough millions in and not think he’s going to make money. This guy is not hugely wealthy in football terms. Their main focus is making money based on the concept of the resale of players. They also believe that they can make the club sound by doing this without impacting the club over the short term or long term, meaning it doesn’t matter that you have turnover of your best players there is always another on the conveyor belt. for this to work both player recruitment and fantastic coaching is needed. I don’t believe that any element that makes this a success is evident in decisions they have yet made. Recruitment of Lavia type players need to not be the exception but need to be almost guaranteed
-
I don’t think they have high aspirations for the club at all their aim is purely on making money. They are not doing a very good job of that so far are they. As someone stated earlier, they have wrongly been looking at players to buy based on resale value not what the club needs to make the club better. This is not about the long term development of saints as a competing club. Only exceptions might be Bree, big paul and Orsic…all driven on the fear of the drop. Hence we are where we are. the evidence and facts so far is that their decision making is piss poor… they need to prove us wrong on this. So they have been awful owners so far I think.
-
I think Potter is much too logical a pick for this crowd. They will want an unknown that will follow their rules. I think we are in for more of the same…. Hoping not but fearing it. I also think Potter would hate working for them and being told the style of play. Jones was so desperate to get job they could have said anything to him and he would say yes… same with Selles. So we need to guess who is next in this amateur line.
-
Yes is able to play badly everywhere. Never chases back after inevitably losing the ball. Always late when needing to anticipate something. Cant pass the ball 3 yards. Never breaks into a canter. Apart from that he’s great
-
You can’t fault the guy for effort and clearly his love for the club. I’m sure he is hating being part of taking us down. I think he has clear limitations which we know about. Hasn’t got exceptional technique (apart from free kicks) or speed to get away from situations so ends up passing sideways and backwards. I watched him play for England and it was same there. I was willing him to play it forward and be different in a better side. I think he truly is one of our own and shouldn’t carry this shit season on his own.

Southampton Football Club - What do "We" do well?
saint michael replied to Toussaint's topic in The Saints
Talk a good game. Celebrate failure in the guise of stats. Celebrate the amount of possession as if it’s a result. Celebrate nearly winning. Not letting the worst ever performance record in saints history shake our overwhelming belief that we are doing things right. Give people jobs they can’t do. -
If we are ever to get out of this downwards spiral they have to realise that we need to stop thinking we are Man City and realise we are more Lincoln city. They are completely delusional. Our team couldn’t string together any passes going forwards. It’s so simple and low risk passing sideways and backwards. Couldn’t rely on other team members to do what they needed to so often had 3 or 4 players crowding the ball and all taken out by a simple pass from the opposition. Positional play hopeless. Technique and body shape to defending hopeless. Trying to pass ball in net …. There’s a reason teams at the bottom don't play like us. The sooner SR realise it and we get back to being a proper team and play good simple footie the better. i think they are so stupidly stubborn to prove they are right that we will suffer for a long while longer
-
Let’s face it it’s the palace game that was the disaster. A win last week and a point today would have been great. This team can’t string two good things together and hasn’t been able to for ages. there have been so many chances to turnaround this shit season and none of them have been taken
-
The board has invested in young players to develop them and sell them on for higher price. I think we may well be stuck with the majority of these next year. This will be in the anticipation that they improve and saints come back to PL. with this in mind they may well also invest in Selles continuing. I think the question will be which of the senior players will want to stay and which the board will hang onto. There are bound to be a few that go, but some of the current fringe players will likely become the core of the team next year. I think it’s going to be another high risk approach to next season. I sure the board believe that this team will perform well at the lower level. 😬
-
Nothing at all surprising today. Shit in all departments. Still passing sideways and backwards as if time is of no importance. Holding the ball too long waiting to be approached. Too many touches controlling and deciding what to do with it. they truly are a shit team and we will get the normal Selles shyte on how we had a lot of possession etc. silence from the board so clearly happy clappy shyte from the, future looks rosy…I wonder how long it will take us to recover from this season / seasons
-
This has been coming for years. Shit keepers shit defence, shit attack. Tippy tappy sideways football where success is ball retention and possession. Ward prowse only quality and hope of scoring. Picking people like Ely every game. Players wanting to feel loved by the manager. Picking Jones don’t even start me in that. A board that is a complete shit show. etc etc etc changing any one of these things will not make the difference. Rotten to the core. Big change needed
