What is the main objective of competitive sport? To win. What is the main purpose of a manager in competitive sport? To make the team good enough to win. On current evidence, is Russell Martin meeting these definitions, even if only by the skin of his teeth? No. Would changing the manager at this point be a reasonable action given the above? Yes. As a point of comparison (while recognising the Premier League has become stronger in the interceding 12 years) when we came up in 2012 our first ten games produced the following: W:1 D:1 L:8 We stayed up that year after Adkins was replaced with Poch in mid-Jan 2013.

I'm not sure I'm at that stage (yet!) but Sunderland were impressive last night. They gave Leicester a right go, and on another day could have drawn or even won. Some of their passing and movement was a pleasure to watch - quick and incisive. They just didn't have somebody with enough composure in front of goal. They're a young side, though, and if they keep progressing as they have done then they will be there or thereabouts. I'm hoping we will evolve into what I saw last night - it really was enjoyable to watch.
