  3. I used to go to the Ice Rink a lot (on a Saturday) and was a little bit nifty but, one day, I fell over and someone skated over my hand. Not a bad wound at all but boy did I big it up because I had the hots for the first aid guy on duty
  4. ^^ But surely this whole debate has been centred on how much tax we actually pay (not what we might owe in the future). We were comparing, firstly, how much tax we pay on fuel and then we moved on to how much tax we actually pay overall. The amount the government is borrowing is not germane to THIS debate. And, if it were, we'd also have to compare how much our borrowing is compared to the countries whose tax takes we've been examining.
  5. I think if you look at the top of the list you'll see it says 'TOTAL' tax burden.
  6. So droll, L - so very droll It did include his nappies and dummy I must admit! I've just looked at comparitive costs of having this procedure done elsewhere. The costs of having this done privately in the UK are HUGE in comparison to other countries. Rip off private healthcare Britain eh? http://www.treatmentabroad.com/cost/surgery-abroad-cost/arthroscopy/
  7. Well, having just brought Mr TF home after a procedure on his knee, I beg to differ. Saw the GP about 6 weeks ago, arthroscopy yesterday involving arriving at hospital at 2pm and home by 11pm. Single en-suite room, really nice meal once he'd recovered from anaesthetic. Absolutely no complaints whatsoever. The procedure etc would have cost him a shade under £3K had he had it done privately. As it was, it was done in a private hospital under the NHS choose and book system at no cost to him.
  8. I guess you can't make a judgement on tax levels alone. For example, in the US and Canada, you have to pay private health insurance. Maybe a better way of comparing one against another would be by looking at disposable income AFTER tax, NI, private insurance, road tolls, etc. etc. etc. (you'll get my drift).
  9. And I do wish he wouldn't wear shiny mohair suits that have incredily tight trousers. I don't want to see his vegetables
  10. Whereas you became boring about 6 months ago
  11. Someone with a hand over his mouth, blindfolded and earplugs in :smt102
  12. Well at least he might get his salary paid there
  13. To service the huge increase in the cost of mortgages / rent :smt102 My partner and I are, independently, much better off now than we were 10 years ago.
  14. This is interesting: http://www.drive-alive.co.uk/fuel_prices_europe.html It would seem that unleaded, for example, is cheaper here than in many European countries
  15. With all their mysterious financial backers, some of whom don't even pay income tax here. Let's face it, we don't know what pressures these mysterious backers put on the Tories. I believe I read the other day that one of the 'potential investors' in that lot down the road, who was Jewish, paid a significant sum to the Tories. I wonder what he might get in return? A balanced take on the Israeli / Palestine situation? (I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with a company supporting a particular party BTW - just that a whiff of hypocrisy surrounds the Tories' denigration of unions supporting Labour).
  16. ^^ I thought the currency traders were 'destroying' the value of the pound. Mainly because they believe we'll have a hung parliament after the election. Another example of 'speculators' interfering with our everyday lives.
  17. So a lot of it is down to the traders and speculation? Funny how that only ever works one way
  18. What I genuinely don't understand is why petrol is currently so high when crude is trading at around $80 a barrel whereas they were so much lower in 2007 when it was trading at $132 a barrel  It can't ALL be down to tax, surely? http://www.mongabay.com/images/commodities/charts/crude_oil.html
  19. Hardly Too big a leap from stock to eurovision. I did it in gentle baby steps to get to Waterman. It's late - I'm tired x
  20. (I can't quite make the leap there ) Waterman
