Re-examining and learning from history
Weston Super Saint replied to badgerx16's topic in The Lounge
Good old Demba, he's either a little bit thick or he really does think that "football" will solve political / human rights issues "whatever the financial cost". Perhaps he thought the whole kneeling and patches on shirts thing was something more than bandwagon jumping and virtue signalling? https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53801271 -
To be fair, testing and tracing is so much more effective when you don't worry about people's basic human rights

While the rest of the world worries about social distancing and masks whilst arguing over sending kids to school for an education, Wuhan is party central! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-53816511

Which sounds like excellent news for the argument for opening schools doesn't it? -

If you had your heart set on a top institution, the liklelihood is that you will have an unconditional offer from them if you are very bright, or you will be one of the 60% of students that hasn't had their grades altered so will have achieved what you needed anyway. I'm no economist but 60% is a pretty big number isn't it? -

'Transmission' is the same whatever age group, given that nearly every person on the planet is able to breathe and touch things! Not really sure what your point is... Here is an article from early May which explains that children are less susceptible to the symptoms, many of whom are asymptomatic. All they had to do was delay the exams for a month or two, not sure why it's set in stone that they absolutely have to be done in May / June! https://coronavirusexplained.ukri.org/en/article/und0008/ -
Because it's based on a claim, come on Turkish, keep up, we've been through this! For the record, it's you that has stated that claims need to be checked out, but have still failed to answer the question why some do but some don't...
-
Bless you Egg, all confused once again. It's not a story I raised, it was raised by Turkish. For the umpeenth time, I have never claimed it was anything other than a story. Odd that you would post links to the parable that you have zero interest in

Certainly not all of them. A lot did a great job keeping schools open. A lot wanted a nice long extended holiday whilst being paid. Go figure, some people are lazy, some aren't. The unions didn't help. The kids taking exams this year, 'could' have had the results they deserved if they were kept in schools. I don't recall ANY teachers or teaching unions going on record and demanding that should have happened... -
Lol. Your continual debating of the subject suggests otherwise. Perhaps he doth protest too much?

I agree, all that 'could' have happened had it not been for the militant teachers and their militant teaching unions. In fact, at one point, I seem to recall that is exactly what the Government were proposing until they met lots of resistance. -
At no point have I ever denied it was a parable, even when Turkish was spouting on and on about stories! There was no 'final acceptance'. It is a story that also makes a pretty magnificent claim - maybe even a non bible study person like yourself can recognise that!
-
And yet you've spent two days lecturing me that it is a story, a fact at no point have I ever denied.

Some interesting choices for last meals in this article, also interesting how many appear to be seeking forgiveness on their 'death bed' whilst others don't. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/in-pictures-53758533

Just to be clear, are you saying that the parable of the good Samaritan is NOT based on a claim written in the bible?

Yes, hth. However, what the fuck did you think was going to happen when they closed the schools and cancelled the exams? I'll wager that the cost of administering the appeals process - that will last three whole weeks - is a fuck of a lot less than the money saved by not having to employ exam invigilators up and down the country, employing markers to mark the exam, couriers to ferry the exam papers around etc etc. Didn't see you moaning about the cost to the taxpayer when you were calling for an earlier and harder lock down so where has your faux concern come from? -

Apparently you are stubbornly refusing to believe, or are too stupid to comprehend, that it will not cost money for the appellant. It will not take much time, given that the Government has set a deadline of 7th September (3 weeks FFS!). You are right in that it is pointless though. The last 5+ years, every city has seen an enormous growth in the development of 'student accomodation'. Every 'Uni' needs to fill that accomodation in order to make money - after all, that is their primary goal these days - so they will simply adjust the entrance requirements to keep the dosh rolling in. No-one who wants to go to 'Uni' will miss out. -
You keep telling yourself that Princess.

Who is the 'different' person asking for proof? It's certainly not me. I've asked Turkish to answer the question why HE believes some claims need to be proven whilst others don't, but that is very different from ME seeking or demanding proof. Perhaps you've managed to get yourself all confused and that's why it is 'baffling'?

That wasn't your point though was it? You called it a 'pointless, lengthy, expensive' process. I've merely pointed out that it won't be expensive as it won't cost the appellant a penny and it won't be lengthy as the Government wants it concluded by the 7th of September. Pointless on the other hand I agree with, as anyone who was serious about going to uni would have accepted one of the multitude of 'unconditional' offers that are on offer these days. As for the others, so what if poor Jimmy or Sally don't get to go to Pontypool poly to spend three years studying mickey mouse films or doing advanced colouring in! -
I know. This is not something that has ever been denied, ever. It is also a parable that is based on a claim. This really isn't rocket science.

Here is your post stating that a 'claim' needs to be 'checked out' whilst at the same time a story based on a claim doesn't... Here are lots more claims that are made in the bible Here is your post, seemingly accepting these claims from the bible at face value with no hint of a suggestion that they need to be 'checked out'. Not only that, you make reference to another claim which again, it would appear you are happy to accept at face value and not demand it be 'checked out'. Oh look, I've pointed out that they were all 'claims' for your benefit, a fact which you have not disputed. In this post I even show you how the 'story' that you have stated needs no verification whatsoever because it is merely a 'story', is actually based on a 'claim' made in the bible. Again, you've completely ignored this prefering your usual insult hurling as an alternative, but appear once more to have accepted the claim made in the bible without demanding that it is 'checked out'. I look forward to your witty and scathing rebuttal of my presentation showing that you have, indeed, stated that some claims (that you doon't agree with) need absolute verification whilst others (that you do agree with), don't need to be looked at in any detail whatsoever. In the meantime, and anticipating your inability to answer why do you state that some claims need to be verified but others don't? I'll work on the assumption that it is...

It was, but you could say there was a lot of persuasion from unions and head teachers.... https://www.itv.com/news/2020-03-14/teachers-demand-explanation-from-johnson-on-decision-not-to-shut-schools -
