My point is, posts were deleted, yes maybe more could have been removed too but as I said, in the end if it is clear that no matter how many posts we delete the thread will still continue down the same path, locking is the next option. You can still report posts that you find offensive and continue with debates, it just makes it easier for us to deal with individual posts that are out of line.

can you see the PM's sent to individuals? Or deleted posts? There comes a point when it is easier to close a thread that has gone way off topic or turned into a slanging match with no sign of recovery than it is to go through and delete countless posts. My understanding is, a mod requested to go back on topic, which was ignored so rightfully, it was locked. Just out of interest, did you use the report post facility?
