Same here. Got a snidey email from one of my bosses last year. Didn't respond in kind at the time, but when we saw each other in person, I told him that he had "acted like a d*ck" and that I wouldn't put up with it. I'm extremely lucky. I work in an area of high demand in which many of my fellow suppliers are sh!te. I can afford to see employment as a mutually beneficial arrangement between parties that can be broken off if one end of the agreement becomes less mutual. People will put up with all kinds of sh!t to put food on the table.

I don't want to fight this too much on this thread either. However, part of the reason that things were privatised was because we were assured the very same things that you mentioned in your post. I don't agree with that. If UK taxpayers are subsidising the French gov because nationalised EDF is making 1.6Bn in profits, I think that lances the idea that nationalised industries don't or can't work. It's political spin bowled perfectly for British defeatist tastes. It has taken on an undeserved whiff of authenticity and I wanted to address it.

The person in question would be termed a boring bastard by anyone with a half-functioning social life; never late, rarely sick and competent at his job. I've already told him he should start looking for employment opportunities elsewhere because I suspect you're right. There is no way that he can ever be sacked for speaking with his mates outside of work, so I think "other avenues" would be explored. If it were me, I'd wilfully disregard it and see what happened

Cheers, smirking. Basically, his mates are all former department heads / team leaders that at some point, fell out with a particular individual at the firm and ended up taking their skills elsewhere. Nearly all of them run their own companies, although some have managed to get elevated positions in bigger organisations. It's the same person laying down the "law" in terms of out-of-work contact.

A mate of mine was told in his appraisal that he "kept the wrong company" outside of work. Specifically, his boss was referring to a number of former employees that have now left the firm, implying that his job may be at risk if he speaks to any of them. Is this remotely legal? If not, what options would my mate have to fight it?

I have a very polarised view on this, although the Tory is being rightly pulled up for saying one thing ("people shouldn't get something for nothing") and doing another (making a vast fortune out of something for nothing). I know, I know. They have to sign mortgage papers and do a bit of business administration. They probably also have to pay the likes of British Gas a small amount per property to ensure it's up to spec. Still, that's not too onerous for £625K a year, is it? The rest? The facts are simple. They make their money from taxpayers. The political situation is relevant in that it created the conditions for them to thrive. They still had to decide to become private landlords, and many would have made the call knowing it was money-for-nothing forever because there aren't enough socially-rented properties. Those are the people I reserve my ire for, and judging from the map, not only are there plenty of them but also plenty who know they're doing wrong. There wouldn't be as many redacted names otherwise.

Every government is a spineless apologist for the status quo, or at its most radical, proposing minor changes to help out in edge cases. Look at Labour with their energy price controls. What a pile of f**king arse. Short-term thinking when they should be talking about nationalisation. Similar here. Rent controls would clear many of the speculators out of the market. It is government's job to ensure that people are housed. If they can't do it, get a new government.

The biggest scrounger in Southampton is Paul Broach of Mya Property Limited. They cleared £566K turnover in Southampton last year.

I watch a lot of stuff from this period. Some of it is genuinely good and really holds up today ( most stuff on that list qualifies ), but there was also a lot of utter dreck, which I also like but for humourous reasons. One of the things I liked most about this period is that some of the films are proof that you can make a movie about literally anything, and it doesn't really matter if people can act or not.

Oooh, Nolan - you fancy defence lawyer you. Here's what happened. Sony announced a load of stuff a year ago. Most of that stuff has been delivered ( read the article ) and some hasn't. Most of what hasn't been delivered isn't important, and if you think that it is, give me an example instead of this one-liner boll*cks. I'm not convinced you're even reading what you're posting.

You mean your hastily edited post to make it look as if you knew what you were talking about? Blimey, if you're this inept on just bunging a few words out, then the decision to buy a One doesn't seem so inexplicable. Have you actually read that article you linked? I think they missed around 3 of the things they promised for launch, and most of the missed ideas are F**KING BARMY, like "Player Assist", the ability to allow a friend to complete a section of the game for you remotely. I'm sure that with the time you've wasted in your p!ss-poor defence of your kidnappers, you could have bought a PS4 by now.

So when you say "fixed", all that has actually been achieved is a means of switching between 60Hz and 50Hz, which the XBox original was able to do. Makes you wonder why it wasn't there to begin with. Prospective owners; you'll still need to change a setting on the XBox One every time you switch between watching TV and playing games. It's "fixed", apparently.
