  1. As someone with strong ties to St Petersburg, I would like to point out that although frozen is probably fair comment, wasteland is not. St Petersburg is the 4th largest city in Europe with a population of 5,000,000 people. It dumps all over Southampton and pretty much any other city in the UK in terms of culture, architecture, wealth and vibrancy.
  2. Marwell zoo describes it as a world class mass public art event: http://gorhinos.co.uk/ If anyone is wondering why Southampton got nominated as a crap town, I think the above goes some way to explaining it. J Sainsburys Lordshill in the 90's:
  3. I suspect the hippos displayed more originality of thought. Does anyone know the story behind the hippos?
  4. It tells me that you don't understand the difference between objectivity and subjectivity and that you have a hyper inflated opinion of the validity of your own viewpoints. Alan Shearer was famously desperate to play for Spurs and Everton.
  5. Top 4 finishes during the 90's Manchester United 9 Arsenal 7 Liverpool 6 Leeds 4 Blackburn 3 Newcastle 3 Aston Villa 2 Chelsea 2 Nottingham Forest 1 Norwich 1 Sheffield Wednesday 1 Crystal Palace 1 Everton and Spurs nowhere to be seen.
  6. In the 90s the big clubs were Blackburn Newcastle, Manchester United, Leeds and Arsenal.
  7. Its not the city itself which is a hindrance, it's the location of the training ground. It's just that bit too far from London to make it a reasonable commute for the players. If the training ground were in Basingstoke for instance, I think the club would be a much more attractive proposition. Upgrading the facilities rather than relocating them has been Cortese's biggest mistake in my opinion.
  8. Scrap that, it's not even the location of the city that's the problem. It's the location of the training ground. Corteses biggest mistake was upgrading the facilities on the existing site rather than selling up staplewood and moving to Basingstoke.
  9. It's nothing to do with the stature of the club. The club is able to offer first team football in the premier league and big wages. The stature of the club is fine. European football would increase the stature of the club further, but I suspect, it's not the main problem. It is the location of the city which is the problem. If we were based in Basingstoke for instance, we would be able to more easily attract the top players we are looking for.
  10. Portsmouth/Southampton metropolitan area:1,547,000 Portsmouth (500,000), Southampton (376,000), Bognor Regis (66,000), Salisbury (29,000), Winchester (27,000), Andover (26,000) Cardiff and South Wales valleys metropolitan area 1,097,000 Cardiff (353,000), Newport (192,000), Rhondda (60,000), Merthyr Tydfil (55,000), Cwmbran (45,000), Barry, Vale of Glamorgan (50,000), Bridgend (30,000), Pontypridd (30,000), Caerphilly (30,000), Ebbw Vale (22,000) Glasgow metropolitan area 1,395,000 Glasgow (1,228,000), East Kilbride (74,000), Cumbernauld (51,000), Kilmarnock (45,000), Dumbarton (23,000)
  11. Clarence seedorf went to Brazil because his wife is Brazilian and she wanted to go home, not because of any huge wages on offer. Neymar and other south Americans are reluctant to leave because of the lifestyle and their families. Prices in Brazil are rising of course, but a modest footballing wage will still go an awful lot further in Brazil than it would in Europe. There is no need for south american clubs to pay huge wages.
  12. 5th in the table overall 9th on behaviour of the public. 9 points behind our closest rivals Fulham.
  13. Our behaviour is arguably the only thing we have control over when it comes to supporting the team. We can spout forthright uninformed opinions about the failings of the manager, players and chairman on an internet thicko-board incessantly but in the one area that we actually have some control over, we are failing. Or rather you guys are failing. I'm doing a great job.
  14. Looking at the current fair play league table, we are excelling in all areas except 'behaviour of the public': http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/matchday/fair-play.html
  15. I seem to recall he was linked to Norwich for most of the summer, so would like to think we could sign him if needed.
  16. According to the statistics I have seen yoshida won 3 out of the 4 aerial duels he was involved in. This compares to 7/7 for fonte and 4/4 for shaw. Doesn't seem to bad on the face of it.
  17. If Mexico isn't in north America why is it part of NAFTA then?.
  18. In case people didn't realise it's 2012 not 1998, £12M isn't that much really. Here's 50 transfers that dwarf the £12M Cortese wants to spend. http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/premier-league/transferrekorde/wettbewerb_GB1.html Pretty sure there's quite a bit more cash available too.
  19. I think Saints interest in Buttner didn't go down well with Shaw's representatives. When all the stories about Shaw going elsewhere came out, Saints decided to have a rethink and based on Shaws strong preseason, came to an agreement with Shaws people and cooled their interest in Buttner. Buttner was left in limbo, Man United needed someone solid as cover for Evra, but also see Buttner as a bargaining chip for Shaw at some point in the future.
  20. A norwich A southampton
  21. That's exactly what people were saying at the start of this season. Turned out to be a load of rubbish. Your last few posts to ring true with me. Something funny about them.
