Davis is #2, Gazza #3 Like last season. At least until Forster is back (not for a while).

But did he do well?! I remember the Stoke game, Spurs game etc when he cost points. Being a no2 keeper and good in the dressing room shouldn't be an excuse IMO. Its the Premier League FFS.

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2009/jul/09/kelvin-davis-southampton-west-ham He said it himself. Being a backup with us was about 4 years later so his mind obviously changed and it suited him by then.

Would be good to see Kelvin given a chance to redeem himself and give Stekelenburg some additional recovery time. Said nobody. Fully fit team picks itself aside from the one midfield position alongside Wanyama and Davis.

Costs shouldnt be a factor, wouldnt break the bank to have a better backup keeper as your no2. Would be amazed if we made decisions because someone was cheap, given its costs points (which cost money) every year we have had Davis and Gazza as backup. Third and fourth choice? Obviously second and third in reality. As they were last season. Don't see why a game against Leicester last season makes any difference. You wouldn't drop Mane if we play Sheff Utd in the FA Cup because he didnt play well against them before. The coaches still don't think he is first team ready, which is a concern when the competition is a 39 year old Davis and Gazza is nearly 24!

To my mind we needed a proper no2 keeper all of last season so that should have been a priority for the summer. Gazzaniga is absolute crying out for a loan move to build some confidence and get some experience of mens football. Then Forster got injured, so he needs replacing. We got Stekelenburg which is great. But we should have also made the other move too. Forster will barely feature this season and Stekelenburg won't be here next season so we are stuck with Davis/Gazza as the no2 when, back to the first point, that was probably our weakest squad position last year. Instead of Caulker or Martina if the finances were an issue or instead of a new deal for Gazza, Isgrove etc if its very tight for some bizarre reason. Alex McCarthy would have been ideal and was available very cheaply for someone who has made the England squad. Otherwise the likes of Dan Bentley, Lindegaard (who is WBA's third choice keeper) or as Batman said, someone from anywhere in the world who the scouts have been tracking. Obviously not going to get a Begovic to sit on our bench but its not going to be too hard to find someone better than a 39 year old KD or hapless Gazza. Just don't buy the theory its not possible. Palace have 3 good keepers and so do WBA. Not an issue for Jan as FF may be back possibly before the end of the season, but aside from replacing Mane, Wanyama etc in the summer the backup GK would be my no1 focus squad wise.

Which says even less for the decision to give him another 4 year deal. Utterly amazing really.

This, sadly, is the truth. PL is not a place for sentiment and Saints have already shown more than enough towards him anyway and hopefully will find an Academy coaching role for him if he wants it. Its kind of cruel seeing the reputation of a great servant diminished through being asked to do a job he cannot do. No outfield player from the promotion sides who proved themselves not up to the PL was given a new three year deal (most were correctly discarded once clearly not up to this level). No young outfield player has been given a long term deal after being as big a first team flop as Gazza. We have a blindspot with keepers.

When he was class he was effectively playing up front with Lambert and RL was the one who dropped wide at times to create the space for him. For us now he is basically playing as a wide midfielder and that isnt his game. He needs to be running in behind.
