... which let's be fair is a better standard than Scotland... -
You are correct. I have followed Billy Davies career and he has won every game in which he has made a substitution. FACT. Why are you surprised when people criticise you after statements like the one above?
-
WE started the second half on fire. US, not them. WE had a corner. It fell outside the box to Perry and he fecked up his ball in. They attacked, caught us out and scored. For about ten/fifteen minutes, they upped the ante and hit us hard. We wobbled and then, slowly but surely regained our footing in the game. Did it dawn on you that maybe this is what's required for team-building? That maybe this is what confidence is about? You just want some magic formula that guarantees changes can be made to win games. Well welcome to the real world. Saturday we achieved a good result against a team on fire at the top of the league who for long periods were outplayed by players who have spent six weeks together maximum. How anyone can criticise Pardew for that game is beyond me.
-
Maybe, but if Pardew senses that Charlton are tiring and then throws players on who nearly win us the game, there is no evidence to suggest that had he thrown them on earlier it would have achieved a better result is there? And he's already explained his reasons. Put it this way, are you unhappy at the result? Because no-one can say either way what might have happened. What did happen was we got a good result at the league leaders looking like we might have the basis of a decent team at least. On that basis, my point is that your complaint is meaningless. We could all make changes in hindsight couldn't we?
-
If we had conceded a goal in the last minute you would have said the substitutions were wrong. You can't have it both ways. We got a point from the unbeaten league leaders and were denied a clear three points. On most measures of success, the result was a good one.
-
Thank goodness for that... when was the last time we had genuine competition for places and not squad rotation based on incompetence...
-
hahahah! Nice one. But I think that house was destroyed by negative neighbours who bood all the way through the building process...
-
When I see a bloke with the right bricks, dig the right foundations and can see a team of builders arriving and starting work I guess he's going to build a house... You're right, they might be planning a ballet, but my money's on a house...
-
On your third point we agree, on your point about poor substitutions at Charlton you are wrong. To take a point off Charlton at home showed how far we have come. The substitutions SHOULD have delivered three points. Mellis WAS hauled over in the box. Jaidi added a touch of class and WE (yes us not them) finished the game camped in their box!!! So criticise away, but do it when it's deserved or you look a berk. No-one with half an ounce of football knowledge could disagree that the corners this season thus far have been a dead loss!!
-
Sadly, Dave, this is the way of the modern world. Those of us with a few more years behind us are looking forward to the ride back and can savour the experience! And I shall look forward to singing "Where were you when we were sh...?"

While I agree with you, I bet you they don't play that midfield often! To have two such attacking midfielders as Holmes and Waigo is really rare at any level these days. I suspect you will see Lallana on the right more often than you or I might play him there... Not disagreeing at all, I just think that's they way managers are these days. They fear wide players becoming isolated and passangers in the game. And while they can sometimes justify one, they rarely justify two. Hope I am wrong and you are right!
-
I hope you will be proved wrong Alps. Lallana is not just talented, he is also hard working and while he does not provide width, none of us knows what the manager has asked him to do. Morgan played well on Saturday and again worked hard in a well disciplined role of stifling their midfield. For most of the game it worked. I would say loaning them out (if that's your idea) is crazy. There are far less contributory players to loan!
-
I agree with the first and third para and not the second. I'm not convinced width was our enemy on Saturday. I'm not convinced Lambert would have outjumped two well disciplined CBs like Charlton had. Conversely, the option to go wide and hit wide men should have pulled their defence all over the shop - that's exactly what they did to us!!! I thought on Saturday we looked like a really decent unit starting to work together properly. Mills was crippled by their defenders because he was really getting some joy out of them! Lallana will always come inside and anyone who saw Damien Duff on Sunday couldn't say that it's a bad ploy per se! Waigo provides (we hope) the alternative. Looking at Saturday's performance again in my mind and factoring in the potential for Holmes and Waigo to provide impact width, I would be annoyed and surprised if goals did not start coming pretty soon.

I know we have had a lot of false dawns and we all know the story of the boy who cried wolf and all that... BUT... Maybe, just maybe this time we can start slow, build and finish strongly like it is possible to do in sport?

Time for our season to start / league table to watch

Pardew failed at West Ham?? Right, what failed to win the Champion's League... -
You required an excuse to be the only club to take points off Charlton at home did you? With or without the ungiven 93rd minute penalty... Buck your ideas up pal. Charlton was a superb result. A win would have been just, just. Yeovil need to be beaten, no doubt. But to suggest anyone needed to make an excuse for Saturday is a nonsense.

lol quite right!

mmm, I think we all said the same about Rory Delap, the man who single handedly kept Stoke up...

I have had £50 at 18/1 we get promoted. I have had an incredibly speculative £20 at 150/1 we win the league. I expect to collect on the former. If we go unbeaten between now and the end of the season, winning at least 30 games, I will also collect on the latter. Anything, as Nike will tell you, is possible. So let's start now. -
We cannot 'expect' anything. We - fans and players alike - must turn up and give the best account of ourselves possible. WE (well you, I can't be there) can make the PLACE intimidating. And then, the team must do their bit with us having pummelled Yeovil into anxious wrecks. And believe me it can happen, it does happen. If they are not right mentally, we can kill them before the game starts!!!
-
Right, here are the rules for Saturday: 1. Create a wall of noise. It it a big stadium, we are a big club, make them know it. 2. Boo every one of their touches. Loudly. Like Milan do. 3. Ensure that not a single Yeovil fan can hear himself think, let alone his songs. Get behind the lads for 95 minutes of solid noise. WE can scare teams into anxiety. US. I cannot be there Saturday so do it for me. And make Saturday the first 3 points of the 117 we are playing for. Finish on 112 and we're promoted. Champions. Simples.
-
No, but just some of the people plying their trade in leagues above us include: Beattie Delap Higgy Fuller Scott MacDonald SKP Brett Ormerod Matt Oakley and so on... I know players move around, that's life, but we don't 'alf seem to get through 'em. I guess that's what happens when you've had 365 managers in the past three years... The kids I would just chuck into the youth team/reserve ranks where they should be until then come good or don't. But strewth, we're like a racehorse trainer who gets 30 two year olds, let's them all run once and then on the basis of this flimsy evidence ships a load off to the sales ring - and half of them go on to be top class!! How can we say Pulis is or isn't any good? And what about Molyneuax? Or White? We just don't know.
-
Tell you what, this club has a habit of off-loading people toop quickly who then go on to make it elsewhere...
