  3. I was off sick for 8 weeks at the start of last year, followed by 2 weeks of half days to get back into the rhythm of things. The day after I rang my boss to say my doctor had signed me off for a while I was given an appointment with our Occupational Health team, who 'vet' all long term sickness absences. The way our sickness absence monitoring works is that you are restricted to a certain total of sick days in a rolling 12 month period, and no more than 3 sickness absences, self certified or doctor's notes, in the same period. If you breach this you are given 'special' interviews and your attendance is strictly monitored for up to 6 months. Most other Local Authorities I know of work similar schemes, so I suspect there is some 'exaggeration' in this story.
  4. I liked the response from Orkney Brewery when some jobsworth said SkullSplitter should have a warning on the label - they asked what would you expect if you ordered a beer with such a name ? And it is good stuff, just don't try 2 bottles in quick succession.

  8. Well, to answer the OP - Earth ( obviously ).
  9. It's all to do with the 'added value', hence the chocolate biscuits case - it's not that they are a 'luxury', it's that adding chocolate adds 'value'. The same with the orange juice, the act of squeezing it counts as performing an additional service, and renders it VAT liable. Therefore, by eating in the shop you are liable for VAT, because the shop is providing it's additional facilities for your use, ( though in effect the price is no different, they just have to account for 'eat-in' or 'take-away' on their till rolls, which is why Rotten Ronnie's and Kentucky Fried Rat ask you whether you are eating 'in' or 'out' ).
  10. You could add that we did not trade via offshore accounts, use unregistered agents, or bring in a convicted fraudster with links to the Russian Mafia, nor have 3 of our previous managers/ Chairmen been charged with fraud.
