6 Music

Heard reports today that the BBC are thinking of scrapping 6 Music station. Really hope they don't as it's the only station playing decent music these days and the reason i recently got a personal DAB Radio :-(

Is this for real? I’ve seen facebook groups about this but that’s no indicator of whether is a genuine concern or not.

It would be very sad to lose 6Music. I only really listen to it on a Sunday but its great stuff.

This raises two issues.

Anyone who votes Tory is voting for the breaking up of the BBC, and whilst there will always be a BBC1 trying to out do ITV for bland tabloid telly, we will lose the great radio and internet output.

How is it that there are thousands of radio stations in this country and yet 99.9% of them are absolutely terrible? Surely that represents a gap in the market.

If the BBC do away with 6 Music it will be an absolute travesty.

As Andy says, there is no other national radio station that compares to 6 Music when it comes to diversity.

As a license fee payer I would be prepared to sacrifice inane dance oriented reality TV shows on BBC 1 in order to keep 6 Music. But I guess that as long as we remain a nation of mongs then the BBC (and ITV) will continue to drip feed us the drivel 'entertainment' that we see on Saturday nights.

There's an internal presentation from Mark Thompson a week tomorrow where it's believed that the planned changes at the BBC will be announced to staff.

The rumour mill has 6Music & Asian Network being scrapped and huge cuts in spending for online activities as well as cuts to spending on "brought in" programmes for TV.

I’d happily defend the bbc from the joint forces of the tories/daily mail/sky to the cows come home, but scrapping 6 music is committing creative suicide. The far right press got on the case of Ross and Brand, but just think of Clarkson and Moyles, sack those annoying khunts and you’d have enough cash to finance 6 music for years. But no, they decide to axe the one station that had a bit of freedom and genuine variety.

BBC1 – terrible

BBC2 – very weak

BBC3 – terrible

BBC4 – decent

Radio 1 – terrible

Radio 2 – beige, boring, blurgh!

Radio 3 – not my bag

Radio 4 – love it

Radio 5 - too many nut jobs but sports coverage is good

Radio 6 – let’s not get swept away, some of it was average, but Sundays were just perfect

Radio 7 – too many repeats

I could go on.

I would pretty much go along with JL on his analysis of the BBC output. For me, R4 and 6Music (plus occasional BBC2 and BBC4 output and the World Service when I'm overseas) make the licence fee worth paying. I also happen to listen to Radio 3 a lot but was amazed to see that their budget was more than Radio 1

A commercial radio guy was interviewed on Today the other day and said that if he had 6Music, he would just play the same limited play list right through the day. Sound familiar. I think you'll find that this is why 99% of radio stations are crap.

Anyway, it would seem that the Trust is starting to backtrack a bit. Let's hope they back down. I would be very, very disappointed to see 6Music go.

Get rid of BBC3, that seems to be spending hundreds of millions of pounds only to out do channel 5 and ITV4 in showing pointless tabloid junk.

The Beeb has to remember its a public service broadcaster, and pour its money into doing things that the commercial sector just wouldn't have the guts to do, like, ironically, 6 Music and the Asian Network.

i like these bits too. Whenever there’s something dire on Radio 4’s 6.30 comedy slot, I dip into Lamo's drive-time show and gleefully splash around in shameless nostalgia, but there are top tunes to be had, just recently he played The Folk Devils and The Pooh Sticks, they made me feel like i was 17 year old urchin, off to fight in the Indie/Acid House wars of 89, and they still sound pretty good.

Gavin and Stacey, Little Britain, The Mighty Boosh and Torchwood all started on BBC3 I think. Plus the might 2 Pints of Lager.

Freak Zone is good. But didn't R1 have Out On Blue 6, back before they ghettoised specialist music? Back before they marginalised taste? Back before they enshrined conservatism by putting the indie kid out to pasture?

6 Music is the Radio 2 for the Smiths generation. The longer 'alternative' music stagnates there, the greater the remove between the unjustifiable snobs and the mainstream becomes.

If they get rid of 6 music, they have to use radio 1 and 2 to showcase some of the stuff that was on 6 music.

Radio 1 is dire, anyway - that is surely the station copied by the commercial sector. So why not get rid of that?

FWIW, I generally listen to Radio 5.

The BBC was based on three principles; to inform, educate and entertain.

So yes, give the public something of what they want, let them be entertained.

But tell me how much informing or educating will be done by Vernon Kay, Fearne Cotton and a bunch of non-celebrities and retired sportsmen learning to knit on ice. Convince me I’m wrong and I’ll declare you the winner, and think of you and call your name out every time I make a sex-wee. Do we have a deal?

I think a similar thing is happening with factual/educational programming. It seems like it’s now all being shunted onto BBC4, freeing up all the other channels to spew out dross for plebs, I mean, give the great British public what it wants. But if BBC4 was then axed I couldn’t see the other channels changing their image to find a home for excellent documentaries on specialist music, science and the such like.

On a wider topic, is it possible to discuss this without ending up sounding like an insufferable snob or clueless pleb, or both at once?

How is 6Music any more educational that Radio1 or Radio2? it is more informative (to the masses) that 5Live or Radio4?

if you weigh up each station against the 3 principles, 6Music would lose out against most purely as it serves a niche market. many of its shows could be incorporated into the more mainstream (and more easily received) stations.

But if BBC4 was then axed I couldn’t see the other channels changing their image to find a home for excellent documentaries on specialist music, science and the such like.

Well that's the fear isn't it. But I tend to think that the bigger danger is that the licence fee is being expected to produce too much output and the majority of it then becomes mediocre. These moves ought to be a reversion back to a time when quality broadcasting rubbed up against populist broadcasting and generally made them both the better for it.

When you look at the 'new' BBC channels (TV and radio), the only one that really stands up as a success is BBC4, and even that recycles its output too often. The crossover between 6 Music, Radio 2 and late night Radio 1, even the weirder end of Radio 3 is massive. Radio 7 is pretty much a glorified i-player. BBC3 is execrable and all the best comedy that they show comes from Radio 4.

The good stuff on 6 Music used to have a home on Radios 1, 2 & 3. I always thought the move towards genre compartmentalising music (like they do in the US) was a mistake and would work to the detriment of music.
