oxfordshire_saint Posted 28 September, 2009 Share Posted 28 September, 2009 Our lack of end product at corners has been mentioned many a time before, but I've just seen that we had 16 corners at the weekend! Can anyone who went to the game confirm whether we actually looked like scoring from any of them or if it was Lallana's usual floated delivery? We're clearly winning enough of them and we've got the aerial power to make them count now, so why aren't we scoring from them? I know the goal at the weekend came from a free-kick, but that had a touch of luck to it.

Saints67 Posted 28 September, 2009 Share Posted 28 September, 2009 Lallana did not take any of the corners. Mills took them from the left and they were very effective. Lloyd James took from them from the other side and most of them were unable to beat the first man. Holmes took a couple when he came on. Carlisle loaded the box and annoyingly we dropped more than a couple straight into Pidgleys hands. I believe it was Trotman whose header was cleared off the line (it was at the far end). Can't answer you as to why we're not scoring every time from them (does anyone?) but if we can stop copying teams which hoof the ball and play it on the flat green stuff then I think we'll really start to win games. Someone is going to get a real hiding soon. Just hope it's sooner rather than later!

I'm not expecting us to score from every corner, but 16 is a huge amount to get in one game without actually converting any of them, especially when you have two giant central defenders and a target-man striker in the box. Let's hope Bristol Rovers and Gillingham are a bunch of dwarves!
Toomer Posted 28 September, 2009 Share Posted 28 September, 2009 Free kick and corner delivery has been poor for some time now there must be someone at the club who can help in that area, if not get MLT in from time to time he was handy at dead ball situations. kpturner Posted 28 September, 2009 Share Posted 28 September, 2009 I think all 921 of us were tearing what remains of our hair out at every set piece delivery - especially at the end where things were getting desperate. I cannot understand why James can deliver a reasonable cross in open play and cannot do anything but scuff it to the first defender from a dead ball. Even our goal came from a dead-ball delivery that sailed straight into the keepers arms. Fortunately he fluffed it. Lee Holmes made a difference with his pace and for some reason I seem to remember him delivering some decent corners too. It is all a bit of a blur now two days on. RedAndWhite91 Posted 28 September, 2009 Share Posted 28 September, 2009 Mills' corners were better than James' who hardly beat the first man. Mostly, the corners went straight into the hands of the keeper or were easily headed out by the defenders who packed the box. It's definitely something that needs to be worked on because with 16 corners you can potentially (although it sounds silly) score 16 goals! That's never going to happen but with the right taker, movement and organisation corners are massively dangerous. They are even more dangerous considering we have Jaidi and Trotman who are big tall blokes, Lambert who can head a ball and other players who can pile in. It's just the deliveries are awful and nothing comes out of it. Currently our list of potential corner takers are Lallana, Mills, James, Schneiderlin, Holmes. I don't know how good Holmes' set pieces are, but Lallana and James seem to have trouble with corners and I don't know whether Schneiderlin takes any? It was his free kick that set up the goal. Mills seems the best options for corners on one side, but what about the other? Something needs to be done here.
saintsforlife7 Posted 28 September, 2009 Share Posted 28 September, 2009 I thought Mills's corners were very good first half, Hammond flicked one on and Trotman just failed to connect to score, 1-2 ended in scrambled clearances and Trotman had one cleared off the line all from Mills corners, James on the other hand was pants at corners, first man every time! Saint_clark Posted 28 September, 2009 Share Posted 28 September, 2009 Mills takes a good set piece, but Morgan might be worth a go after he played that free kick in.
