Summed up our performance today

A long time since we out muscled and out played sides and then killed of the game with a professional end.

Antonio and Connolly will be super subs after we out pass teams in the first half they can come on and finish them off

I would prefer to start off with our best team perhaps Connolly is not fit

We started off with our best team - a team that had already one 4 in a row playing in a system that was working.

We played ok first half though, we dominated the possession but we didn't get wide enough or cause them enough problems (their ginger player had Papa in his pocket first half)

AP at least showed the insight to spot the failings and change them, - it instantly made the difference.

It was a good performance I agree but anybody with any nous would have made the substitutions.

I agree a winning team is a good thing but it is possible to change tactics slightly I would have thought.

If Connolly is fit who should start next week

It's easy to forget the flat performances before AP changed the system. What that did was to release Lallana and Waigo and offer two centre midfielders as runners. Lambert looked like a pig in the proverbial and we were all happy, apart from a grouping who just can't accept football to be played in any other formation than 4-4-2.

Today it didn't work as well as previously, and AP had the nous to change things. The ineffective Waigo especially was replaced by a much more direct player and their left back, who had looked comfortable was suddenly struggling. Connelly was enthusiastic, but let's be honest, he also looked positionally rusty, and Lambert had to shout at him more than once to get him in the right place.

It pleases me no end to have a manager who isn't a rigid follower of a system (remember Branfoot insisting on playing Le Tiss as an orthodox left winger, because he didn't know what else to do with him) but is comfortable to change things to suit the players he has got available and the situation they are in. What he has done in the last few weeks has been a master class.

What are you going on about? A good manager is someone who makes decent substitutions which change games and it certainly is not a skill that every manager has. You would have slagged him off if he hadn't changed things and now you are saying well it was obvious anyway.

Give the man the credit he deserves!

I agree with all of that except the emboldened part above. Over the 90 minutes I don't think I've seen a worse performance from a visiting player. He was woeful.

I agree. The issue is not the fact that Pardew changed personnel, but that he changed the formation. It was a big decision because we had kept the game really tight. Making the change gave both teams more space in the midfield and the two players that came on did really well.

It wasn't an obvious choice but a brave one IMO, and one that Pardew got spot on.

What a wonderful day! I can't remember the last time i saw Saints come from behind to win. The changes made by AP certainly changed the game but for me it was Antonio who was the big difference - because of his sheer physical presence and directness. Connelly for me was a bit off the pace and his first touch was poor. A number of times he failed to control the ball or released it too late. But this sharpness will come with games and there is no doubt he has the poachers instinct. He very nearly scored when he first came on, just failing to lob the keeper. I aslo thought Papa didn't have a bad game other than being continually caught offside. He has the ability (and speed) to ghost into positions unmarked and potentially be a real threat. I'd like to see how offside he was for his disallowed goal and also had a clear header on goal that was saved. At least he is getting goal scoring opportunities. Defensively he appears lightweight but i think that is a bit deceptive as there were loads of times where somehow he managed to get a foot in and stop the attacking opponent. If I was AP i would start the same 4-5-1 tactics against Orient with maybe Antonio coming in for Papa.

Maybe "comfortable" might have been an exaggeration, but there are people here on the Forum considering that Lewington was Don's best player, so there is certainly a spread of opinion.

In any case Papa seemed to have plenty of trouble dealing with him, which Antonio didn't. He also on a few occasions did something really old fashioned by knocking the ball past Lewington and then beating him to it. Memories of line huggers of old, myself, for instance, who didn't have any tricks in the tool bag apart from pace.

I last saw MA against Torquay, when I thought he was woeful, but yesterday was really encouraging, and given more confidence I think he may become a very useful player. Another success for the scouting network.

Antonio was the best player on the pitch for me he was involved in all three goals, first the knockback to James to cross for the assist, then winning the free kick on the edge of the area and finally pressuring their left back into passing back without looking so that Connolly could pounce.

It was his tenacity following Waigo's malaise and poor positional awareness that turned the game around for us. Saying that I'm not sure he's able to play a whole game yet and it may just have been his energy as a substitute which allowed him to play so well. Papa looks promising he just loses the ball too much and is offside all the time. I was getting really fed up in the first half when we seemed to keep kicking long crossfield balls up to him which he would either lose or be offside for.

Wotton was just a little off the pace today, one too many touches and all the other malarky he's often criticised for. I'm fairly sure it was one of his passes which let an MK Dons player through for the free-kick they scored from. I think MK Dons' midfield is more technical and we didn't need Wotton's bite for this game, he really does give us something against the more physical sides in this league but Hammond made a couple of good tackles yesterday to show he's capable against the more technical sides.
