TijuanaTim Posted 10 February, 2010 Share Posted 10 February, 2010 Strange to have both things on my mind - but?? 1. Wasn't CC a damn good striker when we first got him. To me like a better version of Fatty K. Davies (the first time round) and he knew where the net was...what happened (it was about that time I went to the US)? 2. Depending on how many tickets we're allowed, will this final be the biggest gathering of Saints fans for a single game? I mean, will they let us have 35-40,000 for the game. Carlisle won't want many and who else will go?
mikee Posted 10 February, 2010 Share Posted 10 February, 2010 Colin Clarke was one of my all time favourite Saints strikers and was IMHO a much bettere striker for Saints than Alan Shearer. In fact I vividly remember when Shearer got a hat trick on his debut v Arsenal that CC laid on all of his goals in a very unselfish gesture to a kid making his debut. The man was quality and knew how to score a hat trick as well. As far as crowd is concerned, I expect we might endup with about 45,000 tickets (35,000 plus additional 10,000 from Carlisle allocation) as I would expect Carlisle to take around 25,000. I think it would have been more if this was not their 5th appearance in the JPT Final. Great to be going to the new wembley for the first time - and as a Saints fan - I don't care what the competition is, these days don't come around very often in the life of a Saints fan. dubai_phil Posted 11 February, 2010 Share Posted 11 February, 2010 Record official attendance at the Dell was 31044. But wasn't there 50,000+ for Mike Channon's testimonial? :-) And an awfully big number at the Civic Centre for the open top tour... But it did cross my mind that IF we get 35,000+ it will be spine tinglingly impressive. CC had his moments and scored a lot of goals but would never rate him in the KD stakes as his work rate wasn't the same. My memories of him later on were more static

lordswoodsaints Posted 11 February, 2010 Share Posted 11 February, 2010 CC scored a hat trick on his debut if my memory serves me right and he was the kevin davies of his day,big bustling old fashioned centre forward who held the ball up well and knew where the goal was. Chorlton Posted 11 February, 2010 Share Posted 11 February, 2010 He got another hatrick in a 4-1 stuffing of the bar codes. Mark Dennis scored a beautiful chip in that game as well
Turkish Posted 11 February, 2010 Share Posted 11 February, 2010 He was quality i remember as a young kid watch him play in the world cup 86 for Northern Ireland, think he was playing for Bournemouth at the time and he scored for them and saying to my dad that i hoped we signed him, a few weeks later my dad came home from work with the echo and said to me "Saints have signed your mate" i was overjoyed, remember it like it was yesterday, even remember it was for £400k which was a lot of money back then. He was quality for us, scored something like 23 goals in his first season. Remember being in the Milton road end and seeing him score a cracker against Man City in a 1-1 draw, cut in from the left, beat a couple of players and smashed in past the City keeper. Always remember after his first season him moaning a bit about wanting to move to a bigger club and ending up at QPR of all places. Great player for us, probably in my top 10 favourites of all time. TheMidfieldGeneral Posted 11 February, 2010 Share Posted 11 February, 2010 I walked into town after CC scored that hat trick on debut. The fella who was selling THE MILITANT outside the information bureau was shouting "Get the paper Colin Clarke reads" :-)

macthesaint Posted 11 February, 2010 Share Posted 11 February, 2010 I think CC got a hat trick against manu as well .......at old trafford ( could be wrong) He scored 2 and we beat them 2-0. I was there, sat amongst manure fans and no I didn't control myself! I think I'm right in remembering it was the fixture after losing 2-0 at home to the skates. Youre right Tim,he was a good centre forward, did he only play for south coast teams? As for the final,40k Saints fans and we will be wearing red and white. I know we love the yellow in finals but we only won once in it.
Greenridge Posted 11 February, 2010 Share Posted 11 February, 2010 Colin Clarke couldn't trap a bag of cement...and I should know I used to wear his boots once he'd finished with them and I too had trouble with that same bag!
