PaulSaint Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 Wow! "His record as a manager in the third tier is hugely impressive, with 40 victories from 75 games, giving him a win percentage of 53.3 per cent." Anyone know pardews stats? These say to me that Cortese has made a sound decision and we should back him?

Their ability to sign players - particularly strikers - on the cheap and then sell them on for millions a year or two later has been very impressive. Since Adkins has been there (obviously bear in mind some would have been signed by Brian Laws): Billy Sharp, signed for £100k from Rushden & Diamonds, sold to Sheffield United for £3m Andy Keogh, signed for £50k from Leeds, sold to Wolves for £1.2m Martin Paterson, signed for free from Stoke, sold to Burnley for £1m Paul Hayes, signed for free from Barnsley, went to Preston on a Bosman, would have been worth about £1m Gary Hooper, signed for £175k from Southend, sold to Celtic for £2.4m

How much that was directly due down to Adkins and how much down to other key members of staff at Scunny we'll never really know, but it certainly reflects well. They're currently 11th in the Champ, not a bad achievement with the resources they've had. The challenge will be partly be how he gets on with an established squad, post transfer deadline day, with a whole load of high expectations coming from every angle.
