dubai_phil Posted 19 September, 2010 Share Posted 19 September, 2010 Interesting article today in the Torygraph, which got me thinking. Once upon a time, the players came out before a game and kicked a few balls around before popping back and having a smoke or a cup of tea (so it seemed). Yet against Rochdale the players seemed to be in different groups carrying out pretty hefty "warm-up" exercises, which made me wonder how they managed to avoid being knackered in the game. Low and behold we ran out of steam in the game. The article reveals how science has helped the egg chasers (no not a SCW rant) but the bit about measuing the warm-up for the test in Aus when they THOUGHT it was a light warm-up, they changed it and won. I know most of you lot at the game would be in the pub until a minute to kick-off but did anyone notice anything less in the warm-up yesterday? It certainly sounded as if we lasted longer mentally (and physically) in the game. Anyone know what level of technology all our Scientists actually USE at Staplewood? http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/rugbyunion/international/england/8010929/Science-puts-Martin-Johnson-in-potionsposition-of-strength.html
Badger Posted 19 September, 2010 Share Posted 19 September, 2010 Once upon a time, the players came out before a game and kicked a few balls around before popping back and having a smoke or a cup of tea (so it seemed). In the good old days though there was no public pre-match warm up.Teams would enter seperately for about a five minute kick around before kick off. On several occasions as a youngster I'd be reading the programme - or a Football League Review insert -at The Dell to hear a modicum of polite applause around me(yes, this is a bygone age),and hear a comment such as "christ, theier out early" as the opposition ran out from the West stand-Milton corner.Depending on who we were playing of course there might be some cheering from the Archers or general booing from the home fans to follow. Sorry, did not mean to hijack your thread but that comment allowed me to wallow in a bit of Dell nostalgia.

dubai_phil Posted 19 September, 2010 Author Share Posted 19 September, 2010 Adkins was complimentary about the fitness coach (Harvey?) on solent after the game Wasn't having a dig at Harvey, but the article made me wonder if with the Wilkins/AP warm up sessions we may have taken TOO much out of the players? Anyone notice any difference in the warm up yesterday?

dubai_phil Posted 19 September, 2010 Author Share Posted 19 September, 2010 Dean Hammond is fat and slow. Ah ha so there is the answer. Hammond, Lambert & Puncheon all missed some of the pre-season kick about & Lallana has gone under the knife. Perhaps when they actually GET fit again we will see performances closer to last season
Clifford Nelson Posted 19 September, 2010 Share Posted 19 September, 2010 The warmup routine didn't seem any different to me yesterday, Phil. Mind you, the real change didn't seem to be any improved stamina, but bringing on left footed people who enjoyed being on the left touch line, with rudimentary ideas about wing play. Suddenly the whole team looked more balanced. The other change was in restricting KD's kicking foot to emergencies only. With these to actions together we looked like a football team. It's rather nice to know that it took NA less than a week to discover what we have been moaning about for months. Since he is an experienced manager I would also expect him to do more subtle things that we haven't already thought of. As for having a fag and a bear in the changing rooms. Do you mean that they have stopped this healthy habit?

Lol - had that pretty naff Will Ferrell movie Semi-Pro on telly the other night. Just reminded me of the one funny moment at the end when the escaped bear makes a re-appearance

Bizarrely, I was only thinking of the same thing and particularly for some reason remembering Tommy Jenkins (with his unique style) out on the pitch warming up at the Dell and then saw this thread and your post! Talk about Nostalgia.... :-)
