mightysaints Posted 22 February, 2011 Share Posted 22 February, 2011 Daughter has just passed her driving test, been looking at insurance for her. I have a company car and they will not let her on it as she is not old enough. I don't want to take out an insurance in my name and have her as a second driver as they are clamping down on this. I know someone who works in car insurance investigations and this is a major problem at the moment, chances are that they will not pay out as they know the daughter is realy the main driver if she has a crash. Are there any other ways of doing car insurance other than her taking out her own policy as we are looking at nearly £1,8k fully comp for a small 1 ltr car worth only a grand. SO16_Saint Posted 22 February, 2011 Share Posted 22 February, 2011 I know of someone who was quoted 18k for their insurance on a car worth 1k!

It's also a form of insurance fraud and therefore illegal. best bet is to buy a banger and grin and bear it. Insurance companies murder anyone with no claims bonus After a year's no claims she'll be be paying closer to a grand A young bloke I know was quoted over 7 grand by 3 different companies to insure a 1 litre 2000 Micra a few years ago. Colinjb Posted 22 February, 2011 Share Posted 22 February, 2011 Yeah, best to grin and bear it. Just buy the smallest/most insurance cheap car in the mean time. A Hyundai Amica or something.
swannymere Posted 22 February, 2011 Share Posted 22 February, 2011 Alternatively buy her a small engined classic car and insure it through a classic car company. If she can stand it a 2CV springs to mind, although to be honest the quote you got sounds almost reasonable.
mightysaints Posted 22 February, 2011 Author Share Posted 22 February, 2011 (edited) Its no wonder poeple take a chance and don't bother with insurance. My last car that i had to insure was a Civic Type R. £750 with business milage. A few days later in the paper a guy got done for having no insurance same car got a £350 fine. He saved himself £400 Edited 22 February, 2011 by mightysaints
gaz Posted 22 February, 2011 Share Posted 22 February, 2011 Best advice I got was to look for something from the 80s or early 90s, a Pug 205, Ford Fiesta Mk1/2, Fiat Uno, Citroen AX etc. Cheap to buy, cheap to run, simple to fix, can sneak on a classic policy sometimes, can keep up with modern traffic and aren't the ''obvious'' choice for a first car anymore, so the insurance premiums are lower. Sad but true, but more accidents are had by modern Fiesta/Micra/Corsa owners (as they are typical modern first cars), so owning one is more a risk. Seriously, my N-reg Corsa costs more to insure than a Fiesta XR2i or a Renault 5GT Turbo. I'd have loved either of those, but the parents said otherwise.... Somewhere In Northam Posted 23 February, 2011 Share Posted 23 February, 2011 my first car was a 98 CLK AMG and i was quoted £550 a year with aviva but then i guess i was 25 when i started driving cars anyway
Saint Keith Posted 23 February, 2011 Share Posted 23 February, 2011 also make sure you buy her insurance before Tuesday. ECJ is issuing a directive on 1st March that will mean insurance companies will no longer be allowed to price differenty according to gender main effect will be that premiums for young females will rocket
Townhillsaintsfan Posted 26 February, 2011 Share Posted 26 February, 2011 Quinn Direct are usually reasonable, specialising in young drivers. Although having 1 years no claims my insurance did go up slightly but I think that was pretty standard for many people. Fully comp at 19 with a 1.4l C2 paying around £1500
tonibell Posted 27 February, 2011 Share Posted 27 February, 2011 When l first came to the UK l had an International Driving Licence and no one would insure me so l called the Thai embassy and they said they recommended liverpool victoria (they were nearly as much as the car cost) that was 4 years ago.
