My sister-in-laws laptop has stopped working and some help would be appreciated. It is out of warrenty but has had very little use.

The fan runs and the screen backlight comes on but no cursor or any other activity on the screen.I have tried it without the battery-on mains supply only-but no difference.

I have tried booting it from the disc but I assume from my searchs on the internet it may be the motherboard that is faulty.

Have you tried booting into safe mode? Depending on your bios push either F8 or f11 repeatedly as its booting until you get the option. You may find that at least gets you in so you can alter startup options

Create a free recovery disk with a different operating system on it and boot up using that - I used Kaspersky last time I needed to do something similar. That should rule out (or in) a problem with Windows at least

Sadly that didn't work, still no cursor or any sign of it booting up.

Did you actually get to select safe mode?

Does sound like lights are on but no one home so could be motherboard

Thanks for the suggestions but I am unable to get to safe mode. I've also tried taking out the memory cards and replacing one at a time but still no joy.

Looks like the MB may have some sort of manufacturing fault. As I said this laptop has had hardly any use from new .

Just a thought, could it be something 'daft' like the screen has stopped working? Maybe boot it up when connected to an external monitor. Clutching at straws I know....
