How much do you want to spend? Only real alternative to an iPad is a Android tablet but they range from £50 up to £550. Depends what she wants to do with it. My wife has an Asus EeePad Transformer and loves it - you can buy it with a keyboard that the tablet docks into making it convertible from a table to more of a netbook. There is a new version about to be released but you are looking at £550 with the keyboard.

The old one can be bought for around £300, maybe less if you keep your eye out on hotukdeals.com

This is pretty decent if you don't mind going the refurb route - saves a lot of money: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/samsung-galaxy-tab-16gb-10-1-tablet-10-1-ebay-digigood-269-98-refurbished-1091377
