View From The Top Posted 17 May, 2013 Share Posted 17 May, 2013 Thinking of doing a few 3/4 days with the tribe in NYC (2 x Adults 3 x kids) before heading up to New England but never had to find a family friendly hotel stateside before so was wondering if they well traveled folk of the lounge have any recommendations. Doesn't necessarily have to be in Manhattan, can be somewhere like Hoboken.
buctootim Posted 17 May, 2013 Share Posted 17 May, 2013 (edited) Radio City apartments is good for families, saves on eating out all time too. http://www.radiocityapts.com/ Alternatively name your price on Priceline.com you can get great deals at places like the Grand Hyatt if they dont have a conference on. Start low and build up. They only use major brands so dont worry about bidding too cheap. If you do book through the site and give your card address as UK it wont accept it, but if you use your normal address but followed by , say, California 90210 it will go through. Also British Airways city breaks usually work out cheaper than doing it yourself Edited 17 May, 2013 by buctootim
Foxy Posted 18 May, 2013 Share Posted 18 May, 2013 It's certainly no bad thing to stay a little way out if your kids are small. We went over with our 6 year old last summer and stayed out on Long Island, meaning we could nip into Manhattan on the train but mix it up with a bit of beach and pool, which is no bad thing for the little folk, especially in summer when the city gets hot and humid. On of the reasons we only want a few days in the city before heading up the coast. I'll look at Long island though, it's a good idea.

We stayed a fair way along, at the Hyatt in Ronkonkoma, mostly because it was a decent price and had a nice pool. It's a little way from the station but they had a shuttle and as a family base it worked well. Somewhere like Port Jeff or Sayville is a nicer spot but would have cost a lot more. One thing that worked well for us was that we only picked up our hire car after a couple of days there. We didn't need it one day one, when we just flaked round the pool and day 2-3 when we trained it into town. I hopped off the train at JFK on the way back on day 3. Saved a few quid and got to use the car to get round LI before we headed elsewhere.
