You might want to take a look at a WDTV Live. Streams all the usual and seems a bit more flexible playing your own media files, either from USB or network storage. I've got one of the older models that has been rock-steady and has played virtually any file format I could throw at it.

Been doing some digging around this morning, and have found this little beauty:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MHL-Adapter-for-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-8-0-N5100-N5110-Micro-USB-to-HDMI-for-HDTV-/370933903300?pt=UK_MobilePhones_MobilePhoneAccesories_MobilePhoneDataCables_JN&hash=item565d622fc4Seamlessly links your phone/tablet to your TV and play media files right off the bat. Happy days!

Just get a raspberry pi. I have two and they are brill.

Have just read up on these on their website, and haven't got the first clue what they're going on about or where to start.

That usb/HDMI cable will do for me....much more simpler to use
