Must admit I'm not a huge beat 'em up fan. Happy to admit this may mostly be due to me being utterly useless at them. It always, always just descends into button bashing. The series really came into its own on II, I reckon, just like StreetFighter. MKII on the SNES was the first year University game of choice.
