Scummer Posted 6 January, 2009 Share Posted 6 January, 2009 A few times in the past people have mentioned that Nick Holmes could come in as manager. As much as the romantic in me would like to see it, I've always felt that it would be too big a jump to go from the Conference to the Championship. However, with Nigel Clough looking set to join Derby, it will be interesting to see how he gets on. I appreciate Burton are doing better than Salisbury, but without knowing the individual circumstances of each club I don't know whether that is to be expected. Any fans of non league football able to give an informed view?
SFC Forever Posted 6 January, 2009 Share Posted 6 January, 2009 Salisbury are in the same mess as us, financially. Holmes built a good side but costs have meant that like us they have had to get rid of their best players. They could easily get relegated this season and this would be caused in the main by overspending as has happened so often in the past. They climbed to quickly through the leagues and just haven't the money to back up the higher standard of football they now face. Difference with us is that it would only take a couple of Million to stop the slide.
dubai_phil Posted 6 January, 2009 Share Posted 6 January, 2009 Nice, romantic idea, but with the squad we have at the moment and the position we are in we need EXPERIENCE. Too many people in the football side of the club on a learning curve - could be a great idea medium/long term but right now if we do change we need somebody who already knows what to do and can help everyone else that we can't afford to get rid of. Greenridge Posted 6 January, 2009 Share Posted 6 January, 2009 Don't see how Clough succeeding or failing changes what job Holmes would do here. It would be a risk regardless. Might do better, might do worse. He'd have bugger all resources just like Jan, and if Lowe chose him he'd have the fans on his back pretty quickly anyway. I'm not for one minute suggesting Holmes is a more viable alternative than JP but do you think he would be more of a 'risk' than JP? Jan's used 29 players this season so he's hardly light on numbers but it seems we are falling in to the same old trap of quantity rather than quality. Surely trimming 4 or 5 of these players fromt he squad would accommodate one or two 'good' players. Whilst this is not a squad that can achieve automatic promotion it should definitely be performing better than it is now and to me that points to the management / coaching staff.
