70's Mike Posted 25 April, 2009 Share Posted 25 April, 2009 25 April 1978 Orient 1 Southampton 1 Thousands treked up to East London to see Saints earn promotion back to the first division with Tony Funnell scoring the equaliser. What a night Happy days, i will cling on to the memories today because imo today is a sad, sad day. But i will wear my red and white shirt with pride, ignore the jibes of born again skates 4 houses down the road , and look to a return to good days

Panda Posted 25 April, 2009 Share Posted 25 April, 2009 I was there too! I started supporting Saints in 1959 when I was just old enough to see over the wall of the west stand. We were in Div 3 and 50 years on we are back where we started. It makes me sad too and to make things even worse there is still a possibility that there will be no club next season, let alone one playing in Div 3! Alejam Posted 25 April, 2009 Share Posted 25 April, 2009 I remember that night, not just for the footy, i also walked into a concrete lamp post and had a boiled egg size lump on my forehead. Great night though.

scally Posted 25 April, 2009 Share Posted 25 April, 2009 I did Orient, Fulham and Luton, the support at all three was incredible, about 8000 at Luton and Fulham and then 10000 at Orient.
OldNick Posted 25 April, 2009 Share Posted 25 April, 2009 It was the first time my mum went with me and dad to a game. She enjoyed it so much she took my s/t on and I went back on the terraces. My elder brother was caught in the wall falling over.It was the first time I found out Dinage was a Pompey fan and took dogs abuse as he had to walk past us. TheMidfieldGeneral Posted 25 April, 2009 Share Posted 25 April, 2009 You can thank me for the Tony Funnell`s goal... He used to go out with my sister and i gave him my lucky white sweatband to wear for the game Although i didn`t actually go to the match, so he might not have worn it!! :-)
humber Posted 25 April, 2009 Share Posted 25 April, 2009 I can't believe its 31 years ago. My mum gave me and 4 mates lift from school to Eastleigh station to get the packed with saints fans 4:20 what a night. It was the last game that one of my mates went to he died that summer we were all only 14. still think about Nigel on match days.
