  1. I blame NickG
  2. rallyboy - please keep up your daily progress reports on the health of the ailing Poopey - they are becoming compulsive reading. They always start my day off so well!
  3. "we own N Ireland" - what a bizarre comment. We effin colonised it, raped and pillaged it, then starved it, and then bullied it, invaded it and then corrupted it. And you wonder why the Irish don't like us?
  4. Does anyone really expect the City Council to do anything proactive and beneficial to the City of Southampton. Christ they can't even maintain the City Quay.
  5. Say hello from me Tim. Spoke to someone in an influential position at Solent Uni last night about a doctorate for Ron. Say nothing to him but I do think it will be seriously considered. Obviously that would involve him coming over.
  6. Nah I was taken in 100%. Like to think I have got a sense of humour and all that but imo this was a pretty pathetic **** take. A lot of people got genuine pleasure outa that hread myself included. Hope you like taking people for a ride whoever you are but would like to think your time would be better spent taking the **** out of more deserved causes.
  7. 19C you really shouldn't get involved in discussions where you have little knowledge. Like GM says go look and go listen. Ron Davies was acknowledged by Sir Matt Busby as the best centre-forward in Europe in 1969. Now I accept there might have been someone in S America who could make a similar claim but Pele was not a centre-forward therefore Vectis is within his rights to make his claim. I have tried to treat your posts with respect because you do have original views but there are times I really do think it best if you keep maintain a silence. Take it from me Ron was the best. In short "Ron is King"!
  8. I think, and it is only my personal view, that this could be the carrot that gets Ron over! I was talking with my contact tonight and we agreed that Ron, Terry, Mick and Matt were the 4 outstanding local footballing heroes and Ron is now the one left. I think it will happen.
  9. Have had a chat with some one who has influence tonight and I think it will be proposed.
  10. The only cup-tie I can find around there was November 1959?
  11. I met Bert Scriven and Arthur Wilson. Bert had a farm near Marlow and Arthur lived up in Newcastle. When I went to visit him he gave me lots of photos and the like. Both sadly have now passed away but I keep in touch with relatives. Bert Shelley's son for instance lives in Liverpool and is always sending me stuff on his dad's career. Johnny Bradford's son too lives in So'ton as did Bill Lucket's wife. Talking of Charlie Sillett who was indeed the father of John - but he was also the father of Peter who played for Saints before being signed by Ted Drake (who was a friend of Charlie) for Chelsea.
  12. Don't know if the OC has logged on over the last 48 hours but if he hasn't hope he does not miss this thread.
  13. We are working on it but TT will know more when he returns from visiting Ron, I hazard a guess.
  14. I know a couple of the guys responsible at Solent Uni so will have a word.
  15. Sorry I gotta bump this thread just once, to pay my respects to the "Old Codger".
  16. John, funnily enough I don't think Ron gives a monkeys. He is the sort of bloke who is quite capable of living in the bed he has made!
  17. Not sure where we got that attendance from. I am still in awe at this story. My Dad was not even born when this match took place. The club should invite old codger to be a guest.
  18. Got it in one, I think. Or at least that was the impression LC wanted to give.
  19. Quite possibly the most inane bit of info on this thread!
  20. Sorry mods I thought this worth starting a thread on its own. On the the thread re first away game you attended "the Old Codger" has posted about going to Burnley v Saints in January 1932, over 77 years ago. That beats anyone else by over 20 years. See post nos 139! Am pretty sure no one can beat that and his post is worth repeating below. It also is worth mentioning that it is great to see "old codgers" who still use these sort of forums who were watching Saints long before most of us were born. Fair play and total respect! I had to dig out my old diaries to confirm the exact date but mine was away to Burnley on 2nd January 1932. Still a very young lad we'd been visiting some relatives "oop north" for new year and couldn't get back - think it was something to do with limited trains on New Years Day. Stuck up there my Dad and Uncle (who we were visiting)) decided the delay home was fate as the mighty Saints were playing just up the road at Burnley and I was dragged along to watch. Don't remember a lot, I was too short to see anything except when I sat on Dad's shoulders for a while but I'll always remember we won 3-1. My Uncle was pleased as well, he was a Blackburn fan. No trouble in those days but lots of hats in the air when we scored, trilbys for us, flat caps for them. And not many trilbys either, in fact we may have been the only Saints fans there - transport wasn't easy back then and with no segregation I don't remember seeing any others. Been to many many more home and away since, but I'm just grateful to make it to the odd home game nowadays.
  21. That's fascinating - living history! Just checked my records and I see Charlie Sillett scored 2 for Saints. He was the father of John Sillett who managed Coventry. He was killed during WW2. You sir, win by a county mile. Thanks for posting that, made my day!
  22. Yea but don't tell them!
  23. He kept a dead straight face (which in fairness he adopts most of the time). I waited until LC had gone to the toilet then told the Jocks who they were seated next to. Their jaws dropped! He was mighty relieved to have been able to get rid off Burley and get compensation. Originally the Scottish FA apparently refused to offer any compensation whatsoever! In the end it was a case of killing two birds with one stone.
  24. I was sitting around a dinner table at an away match last season and there were 3 or 4 Scots lads opposite. They knew we were Saints fans but they hadn't recognised one of our party. They were moaning like hell about Burley and how we had stitched them up getting compensation when in fact all we had done was get rid of a crap manager blah blah blah. One lad got quite vocal and was saying "I don't know who your bloody chairman was at the time but he sold us a right bloody dud. I'd like to have word with him for stitchng us Scots up". Little did he realise nodding his head along with us Saints fans was one Leon Crouch.
  25. Point taken. It depends if you regard something like the Texaco Cup as competitive. If you do then this match would be it. In ITN I have it down under the Minor Cup category. I remember the match well because at that time I used to drink with Glaswegian and midfielder Gerry O'Brien in the Fitzhugh and a bigger Celtic lover/Rangers hater you could not wish to meet. Of course he scored for Saints in that game and my Gawd was he chuffed. He went on and on about it for weeks. And the answer to your other question is No nothing received other than a call from Corsacar Saint who said you were waiting on Mr S before fixing a date.
