Yet another of TSW's reactionaries pitches up. Although there are differences between George and Stanley. Saint George agrees that very recent climate change and subsequent rise in CO2 emissions are manmade - but that has or will have no effect on the planet. Stanley disagrees that very recent climate change exists and that increased CO2 levels are manmade - but agrees that the perceived effects of the threat are a good incentive to move towards renewables to reduce dependence on oil. You know my views. :-) But I would be keen to know what both George and Stan do for employment and why they are knowledgeable in the field of climate change.
-
I don't snipe at George. I correct the rubbish he spews out himself.
-
Nonsense. The sources Saint George quotes are debunked scientists who are paid by US industrialists by and large. TDD, why do you believe the crackpot sources he comes up with over respected scientists like Sir David King, recently retired Govt Chief Scientist and in no way in accord with everything the Labour Party or green activists say? Yet Sir David reiterates time and again that climate change is the biggest threat faced by the planet and that it is manmade. The problem with you and others TDD is you believe any old reactionary guff and just spout it out again without looking into it. Like the FACT comment you uttered that UK landfill operators are taking EU waste as we are recycling too much. Ridiculous post. It does **** me off that people like TDD appear to believe the shyte Saint George states. I work in the energy sector and am currently involved with processes to help develop a 177MW 59-turbine windfarm in Scotland (Infinergy), a 300MW wood-fuelled biomass power station (Drax), two gas-fired power stations of 860MW (ESBI the Irish state generator, also part owners of the new Marchwood plant) and 1000MW (Scottish Power) and a couple of carbon capture & storage projects. To give you an understanding of the scale of those projects, a modern mid-sized nuke plant as proposed by the govt now is about 900MW. Saint George is probably a salesman selling photocopiers. In fact he does remind me of LLS in many ways!

I suspect the ancient Welsh egg chasers will kick arse with England next Saturday.

Calrkson goes from being mildy amusing if overbearing to an insufferable oaf.

I don't think Karen Matthews, Jade Goody and Kerry Katona count as intelligent alien lifeforms.
-
Intelligent civilisations are out there and there could be thousands of them, according to an Edinburgh scientist. The discovery of more than 330 planets outside our solar system in recent years has helped refine the number of life forms that are likely to exist. The current research estimates that there are at least 361 intelligent civilisations in our Galaxy and possibly as many as 38,000. The work is reported in the International Journal of Astrobiology. Even with the higher of the two estimates, however, it is not very likely that contact could be established with alien worlds. While researchers often come up with overall estimates of the likelihood of intelligent life in the universe, it is a process fraught with guesswork; recent guesses put the number anywhere between a million and less than one. "It's a process of quantifying our ignorance," said Duncan Forgan, the University of Edinburgh researcher who carried out the work. In his new approach, Mr Forgan simulated a galaxy much like our own, allowing it to develop solar systems based on what is now known from the existence of so-called exoplanets in our galactic neighbourhood. These simulated alien worlds were then subjected to a number of different scenarios. The first assumed that it is difficult for life to be formed but easy for it to evolve, and suggested there were 361 intelligent civilisations in the galaxy. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7870562.stm Hope they come and say hello!

Most known big free market economic failures are the result of banking or economic greed/over-expansion - South Sea Bubble (1720), Wall St Crash (1929). No different now, though hopefully better placed to stop an inward spiralling circle because of better integrated global comms and prevention measures. No guarantees though.

I'm quite prepared to consider your contention Jawilly as I know you have some knowledge in this field from your own studies. Please elaborate. Although how any small temperature rises may have led to explosive CO2 rises in very recent times will be difficult to explain!
-
That will be the issue.

It's a case of style vs substance really. Although I agree Labour were too quick to boot him out. Classic pendulum swing really. I wouldn't bet on Brown losing the election. He has a lot of fortitude that the Tories can't match yet - hence the return of Ken Clarke to the Tory front bench despite Tory Euro disagreements. I suspect many business sector employers believe that Brown is doing what he can with the recession and is a safer pair of hands than the Cam Pack. The election of Obama will help Brown/Labour too if Obama does good in his honeymoon. Just imagine the popular poll bounce for Labour if Brown replicates Obama by placing pay caps on top executives at UK banks that have been bailed out! Trivial but emotional stuff.

Next time I grab a Gregg's tuna & mayo I shall wonder which failed football player spat in it!

Good crunchy snow this morning in Manchester as I walked to the train station. But it covered up a dog crap which I stood in, I realised immediately as the footfall was different... The snow had all gone by the time I got back though :-( But so had the dog dump! Magic snow!

Agreed. It just can't be forced should the situation of mandatory redundancies arise. And there will be a good percentage of older workers who won't have been employed at Ford for full service pension too. I take your point though.
-
I understand Lowe's ploy to take advantage of EU employment rules but I suspect Stanley may have hit the nail on the head. Sandwich factory workers are not decent footballers normally.
-
How did I guess that was an OS spin story from the thread title? I feel a bit sorry for the new guy in charge of the site. Jordan is on a hiding to nothing... "Yes, Mr Lowe, three bags full of crap Sir! And published Sir, just as you wanted Sir."
-
Two points: The plant has 1,150 workers (not sure if that includes contract staff) so 450 is a potential near 40% cull. Maybe there are workers who will take voluntary redundancy with pay-off but unlikely to be that amount. But it adds up if they are selling half the vans that they were last year and want to cut a shift. Specifying directly employed workers over the age of 52 for mandatory redundancy will be against the law. Ageism.

Let's get him out of retirement!

The graph shows that temperature follows CO2 over time so it is fair to assume temperatures will increase over this century.
-
Not good but expected. Sales of Transits at 45% of last year. However Ford have pledged to keep Swaythling open.
-
Excellent graph Hulk. Clearly shows manmade CO2 emissions increases. No one is denying over the long term there are fluctuations but that graph shows the extreme recent rise since the industrial revolution..

Making a "shhh" sign is very passé and extremely unoriginal. Please think of something new to do after you score a goal. Dolts.

SRS was always going to cough as I predicted confidently before.
