HSB was my drink of choice - problem was not many pubs in Soton sold it. Brewed by Gales in Horndean (dangerously close to Skatesmuff), The Bay Tree (long time closed now) near Solent Uni was just about the only place in town. Quite a few places out in the sticks such as Romsey, Hamble etc sold it as well. I think Gales may have been swallowed up by one of the bigger brewerys as it certainly doesn't seem to taste as good as it used to. Many a brain cell destroyed by HSB, at 5.4% it had a pretty strong kick to it, but tasted great.

Shame n the rest of the crowd - Newcastle or Leeds - that warm it would have looked like a nudist cap BITD ffs

He really must have been totally demoralised after playing like that and not being selected for the squad. Wasn't he also amongst the leagues top scorer that season, and remembering a lot of that season was under Branfart that was quite an achievement in its own right. I'm sure Dalek can explain the reasoning behind Hoddles logic - personally I think it is because he turned down Spurts. Back then it seemed a shoe in way of getting into the England squad if you had ever played for them.
