Went to Sri Lanka for Christmas six years ago, stayed in Hikkaduwa, a beach/surfing resort on the SW coast. The weather was lovely, a nice dry heat and there was heavy rain for part of 1 day only. The weather in August is hotter and dryer. We met up with family from Australia over there so we didn't do as much site seeing as planned, so it's on the list to visit again. The kids always say it was their best holiday. Quite strong currents, my daughter and I got caught out one afternoon and it took a lot of effort to get back to the shore, my alcoholic brother in law had to be rescued twice. He was also semi kidnapped up the hills on a tuk tuk, taken to a house to meet a girl that the brother was trying to marry off, he was gone for two days (he was on a bender, so we weren't over concerned). He came home minus his shoes and most of his clothes and minus all of his cash. Apart from the stress and embarrassment that caused my wife, we had a great holiday.
