people forget that the attacker who has the ball at his feet has the advantage over the defender who is attempting to get the ball of him. It is much easier for the attacker to dribble by the defender than it is for the def to get the ball off him.

Re Covid ,I saw a player from the ManU V Burnley spit before the the match had even started. So the theory that chemicals released from heavy exercise prompts spitting is spurious. I doubt spitting is socially acceptable in gyms.
