Indeed - I asked the very same question a few weeks back. You or I couldn't form a new football club and expect the Football League Championship to accept our application to join at that level, so why would they entertain an application from a new club that happen to have 'Portsmouth' in their name? They'll either be a new club or they won't, surely?

I'd be looking longer term if I were him. Dropping to CCC will put him out of the limelight anyway (and thus quash any international aspirations he may still yearn for) so, in terms of his career, it would be no less damaging to drop two leagues in the short term...IMHO
