Because players may not want to hamper their chances of a move. Signing a 4 year contract rather than 5 gives them more flexibility to move on sooner. I have no problem with us being a stepping stone club for very talented young players. It is better to have great players for 2 years and sell, compared to plodding along with players other clubs don't want.

Heading back to Salzburg for attacking talent would be good if (and a big if) at all feasible...
