To be fair to him he did extremely well in the circumstances he had last season.

Ward-Prowse has two years longer on his contract than Phillips, which has a big impact on price. If Leeds don't sell this summer Phillips value plummets as it gets closer to expiring. Ward-Prowse will still hold a lot of value if Saints don't sell him as he'd still have 3 years left next summer.

Contract length has a big impact on transfer price - Phillips expires 2024 - Ward-Prowse expires 2026 That puts Saints in a stronger negotiating position if an offer came in for Ward-Prowse than Leeds have had with Phillips.

Saints would potentially benefit being the keystone club in any group. The flow of players through the group ultimately benefits the club at the top of the group, which is unlikely to be anyone other than Saints.
