If Chelsea get Sesko it might open up a Broja return to Saints. If Man Utd get Sesko it might open up a Saints move for Sasa Kalajdzic as Utd were also said to be interested. Saints search for a striker might be waiting on other moves to happen first. Which could be why it is taking a long time.

Eventually they get a move, but Saints have made players wait in the past for a transfer (Schneiderlin for example)

The way it may affect Saints is that Manchester United reportedly have Sesko and Saša Kalajdžić on their target list. So them getting Sesko may make it easier for Saints to get Kalajdžić .

He has 3 years left on his contract, so keeping him this season does not see him enter the final year of his contract next summer.

Not really, he appears unlikely to even make the squad let alone the starting XI unless England have a lot of injuries for the World Cup.
