  1. It's a traditional sports set-up: one provides the play-by-play description; the other does "colour" commentary, with summarizing comments and a focus on strategy and opinion. It works well,
  2. Here is one of Theodorakis' most beloved popular songs. It is called Perigiali--the lyrics written by Greek poet Giorgos Seferis. This version is sung by long-time Theodorakis collaborator Maria Fantouri. Some beautiful images accompany the song, which is about the seashore. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoGdeg2K81c
  3. R.I.P. Mikis Theodorakis, the great Greek musician and composer, known best outside his homeland as the composer of music for the film Zorba the Greek. He also did the film score for Z, directed by Costa-Gavras. Theodorakis was a life-long opponent of the fascists in Greece. His music was banned during the dictatorship of the Greek colonels (1967-74) and he was arrested and spent some months in jail. Mikis Theodorakis wrote mostly serious music, but he was also known for writing lots of popular songs. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-58419832
  4. I've recently re-read Tolstoy's epic novel "War and Peace". This is the third time I've read it--after picking up the recent translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. It's a fantastic read--combining the lives of four intertwined families with the events of Napoleon's invasion of Russia (1812-1814). There is an amazing twenty-chapter account of the Battle of Borodino. The book is considered a difficult read. Granted there are some dry chapters where Tolstoy philosophizes about his theory of history (driven by social forces, her argues, not great historical figures), but the bulk of the book is focused on a fascinating group of principal characters, who are fleshed out with great insight and human sympathy. It's a gripping read that I highly recommend.
  5. A sample of his work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dZky936vtU
  6. During the radio commentary Adam Blackmore was talking about Ralph sending a message onto the pitch at about 75 minutes, via a small piece of paper. It got sent in turn to Walker-Peters, Salisu, and Romeu. I am curious; did anybody find out what that was all about?!
  7. Just passing on the warning I got from AVG!
  8. Yes. (Straight to penalties)
  9. Very sad news. He was a real gent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CL614PU-EQE
  10. Well, that silences all the doom merchants. I wasn't too happy with the team selection, but Ralph adjusting things appropriately today. Good effort from the team. Very encouraging.
  11. Oscar Peterson received an honorary degree from McMaster University in 1981, the year I got my first undergraduate degree. He played during the ceremony. Wonderful!
  12. Literally? With sticks and clubs? Or just fists and feet?
  13. Or you could let loose your anima.
  14. There is no excuse for online abuse. The anonymity of social media provides some lowlifes, unfortunately, with the opportunity to engage in vile and disgusting communications. They seem to believe that they should be able to post whatever they want, and not have to face any accountability.
  15. It's not criticism she objects to, it is online abuse. One can imagine the vile kind of misogynistic messages that have been sent. Would you tell Black players that they shouldn't complain about racist abuse they have suffered--that they should just learn to put up with it? And why do you think she is out of her depth? Because she's a woman? She had a long professional career in club and international football. Do all the other TV pundits who are former players get their jobs only because they used to play professionally? Or does their experience give them a special insight into the game? If so, doesn't that apply also to her?
  16. No, off the top of his head.

  19. Nonsense. Harris dropped out of the contest voluntarily. She did so very early (Dec 3, 2019)--the third candidate out of the top eighteen to drop out. Biden was not selected "out of desperation". He lost the first three primaries/caucuses. But then he won South Carolina and Super Tuesday decisively. After that he won all but three of some thirty-eight votes. Trump knew that Biden was the candidate most likely to defeat him--that's why he tried to bribe President Zelensky of Ukraine. Clinton was by far a better candidate than Trump. She was defeated for five main reasons: 1) Russian interference in the election; 2) FBI Director James Comey's letter to Congress on October 28, right before the election, about Clinton's emails (an obsession with the GOP campaign); 3) the peculiarities of the Electoral College sysytem; 4) Clinton taking for granted Democratic support in the key mid-Western states and failing to campaign there sufficiently (not to mention her comment about "the deplorables"); and 5) the bulk of the media giving Trump a relatively free ride during the campaign.
  20. Just found this. Mea maxima culpa!
