  1. My father was with the Royal Engineers in the Iraqi desert assembling lorries, which then got driven north to the Eastern Front. His brother, meanwhile, fought with the British infantry in Burma, fighting against the Japanese. He was traumatised by his experiences and never spoke about them after the war.
  2. No, he feints to the left in pre-season campaigning, but then plays right-wing when the real matches begin.
  3. Well, now, that's a new word for me. But research reveals this: " ... generally it is used to refer to something that isn't legit, but is being presented as legit." So, to use a cliche used here a lot (which I thought I would never stoop to using!), how very Saintsy!
  4. No need to get all worked up! Everything you say is correct. My point was simply to emphasise that some of these "fairly common shorthands" can be imprecise and imply things that may not be intended. In other words, if football IS primarily a team sport, let's not use language that suggests otherwise. Can we agree on that? And as an old fart (and occasional "curmudgeon"), I find some of these modern "common shorthands" somewhat problematic. I did not mean for you to take my comment as a personal affront. It's just my way--as a careful proofreader and text editor.

Yes, partly due to the way the novels were constructed--he was committed to a certain number of once-a-month (usually), or once-a-week installments. I read "Great Expectations" and "Oliver Twist" in grammar school--two of his shorter novels. About a dozen years ago, i decided to read all of his novels (fourteen and a half) within the span of one year. A wonderful project! Most of his books were deliberately discursive (written for monthly magazines), so the plots were often convoluted and contrived, but he always created fascinating and humorous characters. Highly recommended!

To be precise: "... the law is a ass--a idiot."
  7. Grealish didn't win those awards; he was a member of teams that won them. As Ryan Manning mentioned on Saturday, Will Still has been emphasizing to the squad that winning games of football is primarily about team effort and cohesion--not individual skill.
  8. Manning scored at 89.21
  9. I've switched from FUBO (Premier League games) back to DAZN (Championship games). But DAZN only shows Championship matches that are presented in the UK by SKY Sports. As it stands now, they have ten games featuring Saints scheduled between now and the end of December. Last time we were in the Championship, as I recall, they did not show as many games from January to May. It's an expensive option, therefore. About $250 CDN for the length of the season. For the games not shown on DAZN I listen to the audio commentary done by Adam Blackmore and Joe Tessem. You subscribe to that through the SFC Club website. That's it, I'm afraid.
  10. It seems to me that you would get "bland, corporate responses", if you ask open-ended, vague questions like "what is the Club's plan for the season". On the other hand, If the manager had been at the forum, and you asked him the specific question "do you intend to use two centre-backs as your default defensive formation this season", I suggest you might get an interesting and revealing answer. Something specific, and with unexpected elaborations, perhaps.
  11. The jury is still out. Will I still be having issues as the season progresses? Will still have to wait and see. Still. it could be worse, I suppose.
  12. Thanks for this summary. Very useful.
  13. Specific questions invite specific answers, which could be revealing. Vague, unclear questions invite generalised, meaningless responses. And specific questions (like "why are the shirts so expensive") may not be answered directly, but they do make their point.
  14. There's another article about Delap's long throw-ins (on the BBC Football site). But they focus on his use of them when he was with Stoke City. Here's one of their quotes: "Delap's arrow-like long throws were iconic - and terrifying." When he used them regularly at Southampton, I don't recall them being either "iconic" [hate that lazy use of the word] or "terrifying". In fact, I don't recall them achieving much of anything. Or do I remember them incorrectly? https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c2096dvl47no
  15. Is there audio commentary from Blackmore and Tessem (?).
  16. I would rather the band did some singing of their songs, instead of just relying on signing.
  17. I've been to Strasbourg a few times. Lovely city. And it sits in the Alsace region, which has really good white wines: riesling, gewürztraminer, pinot gris, sylvaner. So, good move on Edozie's part!
  18. 1 out of 3 Trump supporters is just as stupid as the other two.
  19. I'd not heard of that before. Thanks. Just listened to it. Interesting. He has quite the range on his vocals.
  20. It took over from the use of "basically". The words I overuse are "actually" and "apparently".
  21. The cheese is superb. To name bur a few: Stilton, Wensleydale, Cheshire, Caerphilly, Dorset Drum, and Shropshire Blue. My current favourite is Red Leicester.
  22. Are we hobbled now in finding any more puns? Nah, I'm far from knackered; I can saddle you with a few more. In fact, it's a cinch to provide a few on the trot--as long as you don't try to jockey me out of position. Shot my bolt? I think not, I'm chomping at the bit, and that's the mane thing.
  23. -- "Strawberry Fields Forever" by The Beatles -- "Jumping Jack Flash" by The Rolling Stones -- "Waterloo Sunset" by The Kinks -- "Cinnamon Girl" by Neil Young -- "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan -- "The Boxer" by Simon & Garfunkel -- "Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who -- "Echoes" by Pink Floyd -- "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" by Fairport Convention -- "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys
