What are you public sector lot up to on Weds then?

Not my point. What I meant was some parents seem to think schools are there to do their job. Sent from my HTC Hero using Tapatalk -
I can assure you I have met many religious people of many types and have had friends who are Muslim, serious Christian, relaxed Christian and Jewish. This generation is much more multicultural than the last and so in a way, I think this may be an area where perhaps the youth have a bit of experience! I think it is poor form to just say 'you are young' here. I have met enough people who follow many types of religions basically and talked about it with them openly. I am aware how most UK Christians do not take the whole Bible literally(you'd be surprised how many young people do though), but that just discredits the whole book which after all is what Christianity's teachings are based upon when it is meant to be the words of God written down. I am aware many have moved away from this, but if you start picking and choosing which bits are right and which bits are wrong and which bits are Gods words and which are influenced by man, you discredit the whole book.

Michael Gove was ridiculous in his comments earlier. No-one is itching for a fight over this. Many people are going on strike for the first time, and every teacher takes their responsibility seriously. Too many people think schools are some sort of creche. If you want decent schools and decent education for our kids, which after all is integral to our future, we have to treat them fairly. -
Many Christians don't use it like that. And yes, I did agree there are nice and bad bits... the nice bits do contain some good advice. But I don't think it should be used as life guidance as the book is within the context of a narrative of what God wants and so to ignore vast stretches of it is stupid. You are better just to create your own moral compass! So, we agree on some points, but disagree on conclusion. And I doubt much more debate will change that.

I haven't. Just neither of us have changed our opinions because of what we have said to each other due to the fact we are both stubborn and think we are right!

It didn't help she couldn't even pronounce it. Made it sound like she was saying something else.

Absolutely disgraceful. Everyone else on that tram represents Britain 10000000000x more than she ever could. Ignorant and horrible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i47HoiM0Au8&feature=player_embedded

And neither will I from that stinging retort.

I will be up before 7 on Saturday to get ready for my work, but I support the strike. My Mum is a teacher and stands to lose a lot of money for her pension(my mum is only part time these days, so wouldn't have been working on Wednesday anyways). For what it is worth, the feeling is strong, people who have refused to strike before are going to strike on wednesday... i.e headteachers union. -
I think the real travesty would have been if Thorpe used the Bible as a reliable historical source. Quote from you earlier on You really just are a troll!
-
No, not at all, but we are discussing the nature of the Bible and thus I am giving my opinion on its nature. I am no fan of censoring or banning anything, but to bring back to the original thread, schools are a place for fact, hence why the £375k would be better spent on science books.

I've read a lot of the Bible. Like I said, lots of it are very nice, but a hell of a lot of it is also nasty and hateful as well as barbaric.
-
I know it's all to do with translations... but the NIV(the one I quoted) is the most popular in the world(215 million sold). And it is pretty specific about what it means in that quote. But suffice to say, on translation, the fact many Bible versions say different things discredits it as a passage to follow even further as quite clearly again, we can't be sure it is what God wants. How about this... for another wonderful Bible law... http://bible.cc/leviticus/20-13.htm Lots of versions there for you.

Very few people know what the Bible says in full. They pick and chose and have ignorance of vast amounts of it. All pretty low scores in this test - http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/video/atheists-agnostics-score-best-religion-poll-christian-jewish-muslim-knowlege-survey-11750755 - but ironically Atheists and Agnostics scored best!
-
I'm not saying there aren't bits in the Bible that are nice, but there are horrible bits and you can't pick and chose and ignore parts.
-
How about this... for every nice quote you give, I'll find something horrible... Let's start with typical Bible... 28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay her father fifty shekels[a] of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives. http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Deuteronomy+22%3A28-29&version=NIV

I agree, it is worthwhile because many DO believe it and it defines many countries around the world.. But contain it to R.E/R.S lessons(and history lessons where it's relevant!) and make sure that Children aren't allowed to just assume it is true. Let them decide for themselves.
-
Yes. I am very sure that vast stretches of the Bible are hateful, and it would be silly to deny that! Yes, there are some nice bits too, but that hardly helps when it is meant to be the word of God. Either, it's a lie, or God is confused.
-
The Bible isn't rare in schools and is easily accessible already. Also, at that age it is hard to see where the Bible is wrong. They won't be studying it from a purely literary perspective as a 10 year old though. I think Anne Frank's diary, for example has far more relevance to Children in a way they can relate too. If the Bible was a non-religious book, they'd be massive uproar if it was put in Primary school's because of its hateful content.

Damn right!

Sounds like my school had more Christian based stuff oddly! An off the point anecdote now... At my secondary school, there was a teacher nicknamed 'preacher teacher', who instead of teaching the lessons just spouted off about the religion(though admittedly, once people realised he had a tendency to do this, they deliberately probed him). In a science lesson, he told us that God created the world in 7 days and that was fact and sung us hymns. He was a fundamentalist and said many things he should have been sacked for, including that my gay friend would be cast into the eternal pit of fire.
-
It's not so much they present it as fact, they just present it. For example, assemblies would be a reading from the bible/simplified version(one of the stories or just something that has some meaning) followed by a prayer.
-
I didn't even go to a Christian school, and I still feel retrospectively that at my primary school I wasn't really allowed tp reason whether I wanted to believe in God or not, I was just presented with God as fact due to Assemblies every morning, and the nature in which R.E is taught.
