It really is time to bring back the death penalty
Saintandy666 replied to alpine_saint's topic in The Lounge
That's good for you, and I'm glad you led a life that you enjoyed at that age. Personally, I think it is good I take an interest. And are you saying I haven't properly lived because I post on here? Please define what you count as having lived? -

Again, just because I think perverting the course of justice and child murder should have different sentencing times, it doesn't mean I have sympathy or forget what her stupidity led to. For what it is worth, I believe it was said that she naively believed Huntley's words. Huntley is the real evil bastard here and he should never leave jail ever. -

I'm 19. And I do enjoy myself! It's possible to come on here and debate while also doing a tonne of other stuff. You can't judge me from my posts here. In life, I am no where near as opinionated as I come across on here(as does everyone else) because it's a debate forum so what else am I meant to do?! -

I didn't think it was too bad actually! Had everything I wanted out of a hotel, bed and shower and the bed wasn't uncomfortable at all. And it was well priced for central London -

You are displaying lack of understanding of the case here. Carr didn't help out in the murder so she isn't an accomplice. -

You really are totally out of order here. Just because he does not want to reinstate the death penalty, it doesn't mean he is heartless and doesn't care. -

But if such life vs. no life trade offs were done, it could again be used by the state to abuse its position. i.e Interrogator: Tell us this guy is guilty or we will kill you. I don't think that is a desirable circumstance. -

Please, why the insults? I do not resort to insulting you. I address your points politely, so please do the same for mine. I was talking about the specific case of the Birmingham Six and your language in relation to it almost as if saying an innocent person was innocent was wrong(use of the phrase 'banging on'.) In regards to this case, where clearly a heinous and evil murder has been committed and there is clearly no doubt, my opinion remains the same for reasons already stated including the right of the state to take away life and justice not motivated by revenge. Now please, if you do reply treat my comments with the same respect I treated your comment. Needlessly adding 'you stupid ****' adds nothing to your point. -

It's not about lack of frequency at all. It's about having an effective system and the death penalty is proven to be ineffective. And if I was ever affected, it is possible(I don't know, because thankfully it has never happened and I hope it never will) that I would want death upon the murderers who took one of my loved ones... but that's exactly why we shouldn't do it. Those who are victims don't think rationally when it comes to punishment. The law must be blind and fair and NOT motivated by revenge. -

I'm sure people like him are really sorry for 'banging' on about people convicted for crimes they didn't commit. Would you have preferred it if they were still in jail or dead for crimes they didn't commit?! Of course not, so your language should be toned down. -

There have been numerous cases where it was thought that was the case only for it to be overturned later. -

Where did you conclude that from his post?! -

Better spotting schemes earlier on. The death penalty would achieve nothing but giving the state the right over our lives and revenge for grieving relatives(which I sympathise with, but justice must not be served out by victims, it must be done independently). -

There isn't really a lot you can do to prevent tragedies like this happening except better early intervention. Some people are just mental, thankfully cases such as you highlighted are rare, but the death penalty won't stop people doing stuff like this and never has and never will. -

Just because he doesn't yet have a proper solution, doesn't mean a bad one should be tolerated. -

No, never. A state should never have power over its citizens right to life, whatever vile acts that person commits. And the death penalty doesn't act as a deterrent. America has a much higher murder rate than the UK. Sadly, there a few evil nutters who are off the rails big time and the fact there is a death penalty or not doesn't change anything. Events like that in the news story are thankfully extremely rare. -
I think her actions over the years speak louder than her words(as Chuka Umuna said). She has a proven track record in her actions of being an active supporter of treating all equal.
-
You're not wrong there. And while Boris has gotten away with stuff before might I add - http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23433540-i-didnt-mean-to-be-racist-claims-boris.do and other not racist stuff.
-
That is true, some of the outrage is politically motivated because she is left wing and I can tell that by their response to other groups such as the EDL. Consistency is needed. Oh, and I'm as left wing as the next person, and I didn't get my knickers in a twist at Clarkson's comments!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=vKc7ACA9EeQ Chuka Umuna gets it right, as does Nick Clegg afterwards.
-
Another good point. If her constituents now no longer like her, they can vote her out.
-
The part of the point I agree with is that the comment is bad, but she isn't actually racist - just made a stupid comment(which she is prone too every so often, a bit like Boris Johnson, but he gets away with it because he is 'Boris'). I'll go for that compromise on my earlier views.
-
Just shows how much crap people on this forum comes out with. Sounds more like Mr Cortese is one of the Liebherr family's most trusted servants!
-
I think that is a compromise that broadly I am willing to accept. She isn't racist.

Ahaha, the Chinese are blatantly lying about their expenditure though! I've seen estimates which put it closer to $200bn.
