  1. High Skies - 'Sounds of Earth'.
  2. Boards of Canada - 'Tomorrow's Harvest'. Well it's great isn't it. More like the first album than any of the subsequent albums. And that's a good thing in my opinion. They have a sound unlike anyone else; with a beguiling warmth that sits so well with those chubby beats. When I listen to it I'm reminded of those 1970s 'futuristic' scientific research / corporate puff films that were mimicked by the Dharma Initiative in the TV series Lost. One wonders if those two Scottish lads were abducted in the 1970s by some kind of benevolent, analogue synthesis-based alien life forms.....
  3. I never thought I'd see a thread like this on SWF. This happens to be my "thing". I started DJing when the acid house scene kicked off, and moved through the various mutations of house music. However, I tired of house years ago and began hunting out all those classic dance tunes that producers used to sample. I started broadening my horizons in to funk and jazz funk a few years ago. Some great suggestions so far. Dinger has come up with some corkers (Zapp & Roger - good call!) Also check out 'I can make you dance' by the same guys. Then check out the tragic story of the Troutman brothers Good tunes from Hamilton Saint too, however I would suggest 'Could You Be Loved' as the danceable Marley tune of choice (more uptempo) and THE Blockheads tune to dance to is 'Reasons to be Cheerful'. So here are a few of my own suggestions of classic dance tunes. Jimmy Castor Bunch - It's Just Begun (currently being used to sell Bulmers cider) D Train - Keep On Exodus - Together Forever Donald Byrd - Change (Makes Me Wanna Hustle) Wish & Fonda Rae - Touch Me Class Action - Weekend (or the version by Phreek) Brooklyn Express - Sixty Nine NYC Peech Boys - Don't make me Wait Loleatta Holloway - Love Sensation The Police - Voices Inside My Head Archie Bell & the Drells - Where Will You Go When the Party's Over (Tom Moulton mix) Bataan - The Bottle First Choice - Dr Love (Tom Moulton mix) Instant Funk - I Got My Mind made Up (Larry Levan 12" mix) Salsoul Orchestra - You're Just the Right Size The Clash - The Magnificent Dance None of these are particularly unknown or obscure, they're all just solid dance tunes. How long are you going to be playing for? That should be ample to make up a great one to two hour set. You mention wanting to play across many different genres etc but that is incredibly difficult to do in a way that maintains continuity and fluidity. It sounds like a great idea in your head but not many DJs would have the confidence and ability to pull it off. You could quite easily end up sounding like a bad DJ at a lame school disco. Lengthy beat mixing will be nigh on impossible due to many of these tunes having drummers and not drum machines. Will you be mixing or playing like David Mancuso? The tunes I've listed are all pretty much 70s / early 80s dance classics (think Paradise Garage etc) You'll have to trawl through YouTube yourself to check them out, I'm far too lazy. Interested to know if you will be using CDJs or Traktor etc because getting these tunes on vinyl will cost you a fortune - The Exodus 12" alone (on the original Charlotte Amalie label) will cost over £100 in mint condition. Most should be available on various CD compilations, but even that will cost a bit. I hope you're being well paid. Give me a shout if you want more suggestions or want to seriously venture into funk etc.
  4. Another Boards of Canada diversion....... DJ Food has edited 'Reach for the Dead' into a 10 minute version. He did this for "purely selfish reasons - because it's so incredible and way too short". You can hear it here https://soundcloud.com/strictly/boc-rftd-djfood-10min, but be quick, it could disappear soon and without warning.
  5. I believe that mix is part of a new forthcoming live show. Gotta be worth seeing live if they're playing anywhere local. Here's another older Hexstatic AV mix: http://vimeo.com/30103637 In the mean time, if you like that kind of stuff then check out the Solid Steel Vimeo feed. There's some really clever stuff in there. http://vimeo.com/solidsteel/videos For the full tilt immersive AV experience, try DJ Food's Dome Club event at Birmingham Dome. It's not on for much longer and it's pretty unique. http://www.thinktank.ac/page.asp?section=968
  6. Hi LV, hope you're well. BoC usually come up with the goods.
  7. And here's a one hour AV mix from Mr Armtone.
  8. This has always been my favourite SWF thread. I love how it's mutated over the years, and how more and more videos are being posted. I thought I'd post a couple of video mixes that have impressed me lately. First up is a 10 minute video mix preview from Hexstatic. This is utterly insane. It feels akin to something the CIA would use as part of their Rendition Roadshow. I felt disorientated watching it, like I was experiencing sensory overload. At the back of my mind was the nagging feeling that I was being brainwashed. I recommend watching fullscreen in HD with some headphones with decent bass response. LSD will be provided. http://vimeo.com/65906479
  9. It's getting on for 25 years since De La Soul released their ground breaking album, '3 Feet High and Rising'. United States of Audio have created a one hour mix that is essentially a deconstruction / documentary about the making of the album, that features original samples, interviews etc. The mix includes about 100 tracks and took several years to complete. It's in the same vein as the incredible deconstruction of Paul's Boutique by DJ Food, DJ Cheeba and DJ Moneyshot, that appeared last year. It's available as a free download here https://soundcloud.com/ninja-tune/solid-steel-radio-show-24-5-1 If you didn't catch the Paul's Boutique mix, it's still available to download here https://soundcloud.com/ninja-tune/solid-steel-radio-show-31-8-1 Both highly recommended.
  10. Eden Ahbez - Eden's Island
  11. Been listening to some pretty experimental glitchy stuff from Australia. I've put a mix together for those of you who like that sort of thing. Download it here https://soundcloud.com/hilltop_anarchists/in-search-of-ancient
  12. The Mollusk - 'Dusk'.
  13. To the tune of the French national anthem (La Marseillaise) He is Southampton's Morgan Schneiderlin The best midfielder since Zidane.
  14. The moustachioed one didn't have much to say.
  15. Benny Hill theme.
  16. Woob - 'Have Landed'. New album from Paul Frankland. Recommended.
  17. I am feeling your love deep inside me.
  18. Pure gold.
  19. I've now unrooted my phone and installed the stock Samsung 4.1.2 upgrade. I'm really impressed. The multi window function is excellent and really useful. Although the apps that are compatible are currently limited to the obvious ones such as Maps, Gmail, Chrome, YouTube, Video Player etc, I'm sure other apps will become compatible in time. I shall be sticking with this ROM for the time being.
  20. The same issue arises with the Barclays banking app, which will not work with a rooted phone. However, ExTweaks, which is bundled with the Siyah kernel (which in turn is bundled with the Resurrection Remix ROM) gives you the ability to remove and reinstall all root files (su and superuser apk files). It will even automatically re-root when your phone reboots, thus neatly sidestepping the issue. Where there's a will.......
  21. Rooting the phone will not remove bloatware. Rooting gives you enhanced superuser access to the phone, like administrator rights on a PC. Once your phone is rooted you can do loads of cool stuff like remove bloatware, remove ads, install root apps from Play Store, install custom operating systems (ROMs) etc. Here is a good place to start: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/how-to-root-the-samsung-galaxy-s-iii-xda-developer-tv/ Remember, your S3 will be the International version, not Verizon, AT&T etc. If you are interested in installing a custom ROM then have a look at this. http://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-roms/how-to-install-custom-rom-on-rooted-galaxy-s3/ Any questions, give me a shout.
  22. Nick Nicely - Psychotropia
  23. There's so much quality music to download from that blog. Some rare gems too. And it's all free. Tuck in.
  24. Sounds good. I'll check it out. In the mean time, here's something you may like. http://90something.blogspot.co.uk/
  25. I have rooted my S3 and have been experimenting with various custom ROMs. So far I have tried out CyanogenMod 10 (nightlies), WannamLite, Omega and Resurrection Remix. Both WannamLite and Omega are pretty similar to stock Samsung but with bloatware removed. CM10 and RR are excellent. The latter is probably my favourite so far, it is so ridiculously customisable. Has anyone got any recommendations for custom ROMs?
