  1. There were multiple safeguards in place in Canada (they lasted less than two years) and Oregon. Other countries as well though I would have to get the details. 54 MPs are trying to get the bill to be expanded already: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/10/05/widen-access-to-assisted-dying-say-labour-mps/ They want the bill to apply. To the terminally ill and "the incurably suffering" From Canada: “When we were debating this in 2015, the Netherlands stories and Belgium stories were constantly talked about, and the response was ‘we’re Canadians, that’s not going to happen’.” But “that’s what happened”
  2. You're the only person who has mentioned nazi levels of social cleansing. You're deliberately creating wild exagerratiobs to try to discredit the very valid point. I've already explained to you that it was the case in both Canada and Belgium that a terminal medical diagnosis was required abd then the rules changed. I explained to you that a tiny percentage of applications get turned down in Canada. De Corte was 23 and deeply traumatised after witnessing a terrorist attack. How can it possibly be OK for her to be out to death in that scenario? All signed off by two psychiatrists by the way. Or Raikin above who had lots of terrible illnesses but decided that nobody cared about her and that her problems were mostly mental but decided to ask to be killed anyway because she considered herself to be a burden. If as seems likely this passes, it will be a tragedy that cases like I have described will happen (and there plenty more so let's not try to pretend they don't exist anymore) and it's also tragic that you utterly fail to see a differing and perfectly valid alternative point of view from your own.
  3. Because unnecessary suffering is subjective. Also because of things like this which apparently are simply examples of rude or unprofessional staff according to Lighthouse: In The New Atlantis, Alexander Raikin described the case of Rosina Kamis, who had fibromyalgia and chronic leukemia, along with other mental and physical illnesses. She presented these symptoms to the MAID assessors and her death was approved. Meanwhile, she wrote in a note evidently meant for those to whom she had granted power of attorney: “Please keep all this secret while I am still alive because … the suffering I experience is mental suffering, not physical. I think if more people cared about me, I might be able to handle the suffering caused by my physical illnesses alone.” She was put to death on September 26, 2021, via a lethal injection, at the age of 41. A young woman who survived an ISIS bombing chose euthanasia rather than live with the trauma, according to a report. Shanti De Corte was a 17-year-old student traveling with her classmates at Brussels Airport when ISIS terrorists detonated a bomb. The March 2016 blast, along with two others set off by the group at a Brussels subway station, killed 32 people and left more than 300 injured. De Corte was not physically injured in the attack, but endured years of panic attacks and depression afterward, the Mirror reported. She tried to kill herself twice, in 2018 and 2020, and posted regularly on social media about her struggles. De Corte, then 23, chose to be euthanized earlier this year, which is legal in Belgium. She died on May 7 after two psychiatrists signed off on her request. Suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease at 41, Sean Tagert required 24-hour care, but British Columbia only provided 16-hour assistance. Paying caretakers for the remaining eight hours cost Tagert CA$264 per day. Health authorities did offer to move Tagert to an institution, but its location was far from the young son who was clearly his father’s prime reason for living, as Tagert described such a separation as a “death sentence”. The man managed to raise CA$16,000 to invest in medical equipment that would allow him to remain at home, but the funds were insufficient. So instead he applied for euthanasia. The end At the age of 61, Alan Nichols had a history of depression and was hospitalised as a suicide risk in 2019 — something of an irony, as in due course the hospital staff, according to his family, was altogether too helpful in facilitating the patient’s application for euthanasia. That application was accepted, even though the only health condition it cited as so intolerable that Nichols wanted to die was “hearing loss”. After Nichols was put to death, his family objected that the man was not suffering unbearably, had been refusing to take his medication, and wouldn’t use the cochlear implant that helped him hear. But no medical personnel had ever contacted his relatives, out of respect for patient confidentiality.
  4. Right but we know that the risk of expansion of the law isn't just hyperbole because there are a number of examples of it happening. So your example of gay marriage was a silly one.
  5. What an absolutely bizarre leap of logic. Where is the evidence that legalisibg same sex marriage will lead to marrying 10 year olds and horses? How is this related in any way?
  6. It depends what your definition of working is and what your criteria for success is. Canada's assisted dying law is certainly working in the eyes of many. Increasing numbers are dying at any rate.

Some of the motivations for disliking non believers and Jews are what they have in common. Or are you suggesting that the fundamentalist extremists Hamas don't have a hatred for Israelis because they are not Muslim?
  8. Read this thread as that point has been covered a few times.
  9. What's a correct gun?
  10. Anyone else having a Saints detox? The minute the final whistle went, I turned off the telly and other than posting a couple of things on here I haven't seen or heard anything else. Probably for the best then I can pretend it didn't happen.
  11. It's also not an outlandish thing to suppose that some relatives will encourage either subtley or overtly someone to hurry up and die so that they can claim their inheritance. Lighthouse has laughed at this scenario as if it's something ridiculous. I accept it would be a minority of cases but it absolutely will happen and it's an entirely plausible and valid concern to have with human nature being what it is.
  12. I can only conclude that you simply didn't read at least half of the examples I gave if you're describing them as simply cases of unprofessional or rude staff. You're also failing to understand-again- that's it's not forcing people to die against their will, it's about the person themselves feeling coerced to do so or to consent so as not to be a burden of which there are many examples where similar laws have been introduced. Did you ever end up watching the documentary with some semblance of an open mind?
  13. Yes he does. It's a noted departure from his usual posting style and he can't seem to understand the implications from this sort of law and he keeps repeating the fallacy that this is simply allowing terminally ill people to end their lives a tiny bit earlier. It's surprised me to be honest.
  14. Good on Wes if he does vote against.

Show me where I said the war involved Isis. When you can't find it come back and apologise. Find where I said that Iran and Isis are identical and when you can't find me saying that come back and apologise. Show me anywhere where I suggested that I am not entirely aware of tensions between different middle Eastern States I bthe region. Like I said you're either doing it on purpose or you really are unaware of the point I was making. Go and read back my posts very slowly and it may become clearer to you. You're simply inventing something I didn't say.
  16. Lol. Can't even be bothered to talk about it.

I think you're deliberately pretending to be dense at this point. No point in engaging further as you aren't willing to have a sensible conversation.

No I didn't say they were buddies you imbecile. They both share an extremist ideology of Islam and both despise Israel to the degree that they would continue to fight and murder them regardless of what Israel did. “The fact is, even if you were to stop bombing us, imprisoning us, torturing us, vilifying us, and usurping our lands, we would continue to hate you because our primary reason for hating you will not cease to exist until you embrace Islam,” Is a quote that applies to Hamas as much as ISIS. How is that a difficult concept for you to grasp? As I said to you, you can't judge the war in Gaza without placing it in the context of other similar wars. Otherwise youre holding Israel to an entirely different standard that you wouldn't hold other nations to.

What you've said there makes no sense whatsoever. I would have thought that the link between ISIS and Hamas would be obvious, even for you. I wonder if you can think of something in common that they might share? Of course other conflicts are relevant to this one. Simply condemning Israel for civilian deaths without looking at similar wars for context just proves that you're hellbent on holding the Israelis to a different standard. There's a word for that.
  20. "My point anyway was that she is clearly not doing as well as she was previously so you would imagine she would take any opportunity to get herself out there in order to persuade voters to come out for her."
  21. Please win saints if only to give us something to play for this year. The rest of the season will be pretty depressing if we are essentially relegated by December.
  22. Russell Martin is a slightly above average championship manager. A manager at that level with the players we had last year will always have a reasonable chance of promotion. Conversely, that same manager will always have a good chance of relegation in the league above with a lower level of players for that league. Admittedly I didn't think we would be doing quite as badly as we are.
  23. Anyone else rather surprised that we've not seen a minute of Ronnie Edwards in the league this season? The way he was built up I before he signed I thought he'd be on the bench with a few minutes at the very least.
  24. Glad you are accepting it was actually someone from the magazine and that I wasn't duped. I'm not saying she was hiding, I said I my opinion it was a bad decision not to do the long form interview as Biden and Trump did and I also think it was a mistake to miss the dinner yesterday to become the first candidate to miss it in over 40 years. The impression that gives in my view is not a positive one. Your second paragraph I largely agree. A competent and semi-inspiring candidate should by rights be wiping the floor with Trump. Kamala's word vomit, lack of poise and identity politics spiel is putting her in danger of losing an election that she really should be winning handily.

Name one other modern urban war that has had a lower ratio of women and children dead to enemy combatant.
