Sorry Turkish, I was being unclear. I'm refering to post 5 of this thread, "I'll probably be accused of being racist again for mentioning this article." I was taking issue what seemed to be a desire to draw this debate as a political issue (right or left, racist, liberal, etc), when it's really about jumping to conclusions in absence of the facts IMO.

As far as I can see it, one 'side' (and in particular the poster you responded to) was suggesting we wait and hear two sides of the story before we assume some terrible injustice has been done one way or the other. That's nothing to do with being 'liberal left'. It ought to be fairly common sense. It's one of the basic premises of justice. The whole 'Nazi right' thing is irrelevant and not the point at issue. Turkish hinted that he'd probably be accused of racism, but as far as I can see he hasn't been. This thread appears to me to be split along lines of who is prepared to jump to a conclusion based on sensationalist (and shoddy) journalism, and who is prepared to wait for the facts to emerge. This may be a case of political correctness 'going mad', it may be a genuine racist brought to book, or it may be (as you suggest) somewhere in between. The point is we don't know yet and we only have the opinion of the accused (who denies it, as you might expect). In the meantime the Echo have got what they wanted; loads of interest in their story and loads of visitors to their website. To suggest that wasn't their aim when publishing sensationalist half-of-the-truth stories is naive.

Yes, but it's just one person's wrongdoing and doesn't need any further reportage. This conversation is bound to tend toward generalisation, where generalisation is exactly inappropriate.

DP, nobody, but nobody, is saying that she was right (except SuperMikey, and he admitted his mistake). Only that the raising of this minor Australian news story on a British website, in the context of many other 'look what those bloody muslims are up to again' threads, is at best irresponsible. And that the OP, far from lamenting the fact that this story does muslims no favours, is in fact parading her crime in front of an audience who would never otherwise have seen it for no better reason than to wring hands over the stupidity of a muslim. "Look at the muslim; why is the muslim so stupid?" That's at best shortsighted on the part of the OP.

The story would pass as a minor footnote in international news (and probably wouldn't even be reported over here) were it not for a desire to portray muslims as conniving. If the OP were really concerned that this story paints muslims in a bad light, he would never have given it further publicity by posting it on the forum of a football club from a different country.

So pointing out the wrongdoing of certain muslims, with special emphasis on their being muslims, without any reference to similar acts committed by other people groups, in a none too carefully veiled attempt to make out that muslims are bad people (see this thread and the paedophile one), that's not 'suggested or implied racism'? Yes, of course it is. Imputing the ills of society to a specific people group... mmm, that rings a few bells. This kind of thing only 'weeds out the gullible from the free-thinkers' in the sight of the 'free-thinkers', i.e. it only serves to confirm the beliefs of those operating under a blind prejudice.
