  4. Manuel sadly your right about some folk see it as supporting the current military campaign , its a shame they are mistaken In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. Maj John Mccrae _ Doctor
  5. CB I was focussing on your comments re Why the hell are we commemorating the start of one of the worst wars in history and not the wearing of poppies. Its is a five year commemoration The monarch is due to attend the event at Glasgow Cathedral on August 4 next year. The city has been chosen as a focal point for activities to mark the start of the conflict, as it is hosting the Commonwealth Games which end the day before. Across the country, flags on public buildings will fly at half mast on the anniversary of the outbreak, while, in Belgium, another service will be held at St Symphorien Military Cemetery near Mons, where similar numbers of British and German war dead are buried, including the first and last Commonwealth soldiers killed in the conflict. The day will end with a vigil at Westminster Abbey where a single candle will be extinguished at 11pm, a century on from the moment when, in the words of Sir Edward Grey, Britain’s foreign secretary at the time, “the lamps are going out all over Europe”. details of the entire programme have been annouced for 2014-2018, which will allow people to mark the conflict which ravaged the continent “with sorrow and with pride”. Nearly 10 million soldiers were killed before the guns finally fell silent on Armistice Day, 11 November 1918. I agree it was one of the worst wars, but as is mentioned above 10 million soldiers and countless civilians lost their lives It is not a jingoistic commemoration but one of sorrow amongst all else.
  6. I read the article backtootim I understand where he is coming from I respect his view point while I do not agree with him entirely as a long serving ex soldier and like others I will be on parade on Sunday. To remember the fallen in what ever conflict . I know the mother of one of the two female medics who died in afghan and Iraq . Her daughter was doing her job when she was blown up with others . Last year her best mate died in afghan after be shot by an off duty afghan policeman . There will be a specially thought for Sally's daughter and CPl Channing day and my dad's mates who were shot and murdered while they were sleeping by the nagana while my dad and the rest of his platoon were out on patrol during the Palestine conflict. 6 died that day and two died of their injuries a week or so later . He was serving with 5th battalion parachute regiments in March 1946 I will wear dad's beret on the way to the cathedral as a tribute to him and his slain colleagues and my own corp beret on the way back out of respect to everyone else So you see backtootim. I have a lot of understanding about what this weekend means to servicemen up and down the country
  7. Ah backtootim . a usual rant from you not inexpected Bless Oh in case you have forgotten it is rememberance sunday this weekend how ever guess what I hear and see most about is the Pudsey bear and children in need appeal which is next weekend Advertising of special programmes on the TV and Radio Where are your thought on this? I will where my poppy with pride and next years events are not a glorification of war celebrations, quite the opposite if you chose to look into it more deeply CB
  8. Im not changing my opinion bigbadbob, you need to see the whole clip. not jsut one misleading photo Seconds later in another picture campbell is alive an well , there was minimal touch. Yes the keeper was the last player and in the refs mind it was a sending off but he debate after the show had some of the pundits having the same view as myself
  9. I watched the cardiff v swans game on the boat coming back from aberdeen A cardiff player went down and he was running as if to pass the GK but then veered into the Keeper. The cardiff player did the traditonal dying swan act rolled several time. the Keeper was sent off I thought the cardiff player should have stayed on his feet and put the ball into the empty net Tha cardiff player hardly touched the keeper and in my mind was at fault. but the player still did all the threatrics In my Opinion the cardiff player cheated big time
  10. On a positive note may be the skates will be allowed to build a new commnuity stadium on the soon to be derilict sites Im still saddened that so many folk will be losing their jobs and ship building skills will be lost to the area
  11. Also The SNP do not want Nuclear subs up here and is going to fund his own Braveheart Forces So I predict in the future that BAE will pull out of scotland if Sammy the Salmond gets his wishes
  12. That is really sad but a sign of the times As expected The closure of Portsmouth is hardly mentioned if not at all up here on the news News BAE Systems: The firm cut around 900 jobs at its Govan base.Jonathan Rennie BAE Systems will axe around 800 shipbuilding jobs at sites across Scotland. The company announced on Wednesday that is was consulting on 835 job losses at its sites in Govan and Scotstoun in Glasgow, as well as Rosyth in Fife and Filton in Bristol. At Prime Minister's questions, David Cameron said: "These are extremely difficult decisions and our first thoughts should be with all of those that are affected." He added: "We want our Royal Navy to have the best and most modern ships and the best technology. That means we will go on building warships on the Clyde, we will be announcing three new offshore patrol vessels, keeping that yard busy rather than paying for it to remain idle as the last government proposed." In his response to the SNP's Westminster leader Angus Robertson he added: "No one should be in any doubt of two things: under this Government we will have aircraft carriers, Type 45 destroyers, the new frigates, the hunter-killer submarines. "And there's something else they should know: if there was an independent Scotland we wouldn't have any warships at all."Scotland Secretary Alistair Carmichael said that despite news of the shipyard closures, the Government was working hard to promote business in Scotland. Asked for assurances from Labour's Margaret Curran that the legacy of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow would not go to waste following today's news, he said: "I give you every assurance that, as was the case recently in the crisis surrounding the Grangemouth petrochemical plant, I will work with any party in any part of the country where Scotland's vital interests are concerned."I extend that invitation to you, to the Scottish National Party, to the Scottish government." Although he acknowledged the significance of BAE's announcement, he said: "It was a day we always knew was coming. But working together we will manage to meet the challenges much more effectively."
  13. Latter day I will ask a shetlander next time I meet up with one but jour description is spot on
  14. Living up in Orkney it's very difficult to be a follower of fashion but what is it with all these footballers and sportsman suddenly wearing these huge beards . I could understand if they were being selected for the Shetland jarl squad . As it is mandatory to have a viking beard . Any one give me a sensible response on whether this is a new fashion statement ?
  15. What worries me about all these media stories is the the amount of leaked documents they refer to. Some are done deliberately to test public opinion some are leaked by opposition parties to discredit the government of the day. Surely the government agencies etc etc should have better security on documents. Who needs snowden when you have the governments own leakapedia agents.
  16. Very good Derry The roof tiles are nailed in Dont have triple glazing . more quadruple owing to the thickness of the glass they use here If it is really windy up here the windows do occassionally go a strange shape. Im expecting an implosion at any time
  17. No I'm referring to the other guy who was seen about 10pm as reported by the Irish tourists if the media reports are anything to go by . I think the media are clutching at straws and not helpful to the investigation
  18. Well verbal just for you the inviduals ethnicity can be classed as black African , black Caribbean or black other . Not that this matters . As the media mcanns , their friends and other alleged witness recollect seeing someone who is white taking a child away . If you recollect Murat was a prime suspect and he is white . What this latest article demonstrates is that nobody really has a scoobie what happened and all these reports go from one extreme to the other and don't actually help with the investigation
  19. Excellent thread Jeff I'm contemplating putting an extension on my house to. . Down below a garage and utility room joined on to the kitchen and an extended bedroom with a conservatory type room above the garage . Anyone done something similar to their houses I have a one and a half storie house
  20. Verbal get off your high horse . I was using the correct terminology . Ethnic community as it doesn't say where this person is from . Could be Somalian Moroccan or African or Middle Eastern The issue I was alluding to is for a number of years people have said it was a white male who was seen walking away with a young child . Either this is poor reporting or the met police, and mcanns their friends have got it fundamentally wrong or just don't have a clue what happened
  21. In tescos tonight . Saw the daily mirror and a picture on the front page showing a picture of someone from a very ethnic background who they believe kidnapped maddie . He is the individual who used to work at the complex and died a few years later on a traffic What is really odd is that various people saw a white person carrying a lass away at around 10pm The e fit pictures recently released cleared showed a white male . So can the met or Portuguese police say who they are looking for and remove the efit pictures if they are looking for someone of the ethnic community . So thus ex worker is not a woman as first reported in 2007 but is now a non white person . Last week it was revealed Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry, are to apply under Portuguese law to become private “prosecutors”. It may help them influence the course of the investigation and any future prosecution.
  22. Yes for the job in question yes they did gave the right skills and one was invited to interviewed but didn't even apologise for not turning up for interview
  23. These were application forms not cv's . It is sad to see .what you expect is people who apply for jobs to really sell themselves .these couple were not interested in working . I'm not surprised it happens but it is sad to see all the same
  24. None of those brought have nothing to do with the main strand of the Saville investigation . Indeed has anyone been directly arrested in relation to Saville .? Even the driver who topped himself was only classed as being third strand not connected with Saville I can understand people being scared if Saville judging by his alleged threats but all these others are unconnected to Saville . So all these people could have come forward sooner . Janice long kissed me on the cheek once can I claim that as sexual abuse ? It was peck her back as a thank you . It was a welcoming peck
  25. I have seen a couple of applications from people applying for jobs Each one says. The Job centre has told me I have have to apply for this job even though I dont want the job or wish to apply. I do not have any relevent skills that are suitable for this job. so please do not consider me for this job Are the Job Centre aware of these type of applications , How many out there also receive similar types of application comments ?
