Their not rosetinted, I see the problems we have but Poortvliet isn't one of them. He's doing an OK job considering the circumstances. You never gave the guy a chance, which makes any assessment of his performances so far by you pretty useless.

Wouldn't Poortvliet's post-match comments suggest otherwise?

Thanks for the PM invite to the new forum but next time sending it once will suffice. I'm just not interested.... No reason to start spamming people on here. -

This was only a reply to Poortvliet not knowing the player. I didn't mean that Hockaday was going to teach Poortvliet the ropes about being a manager just that Hockday could inform Poortvliet on the abilities of the players in the reserve and first team. I'm sure even his CV would suffice for that.

He's been brought in on the advice of Wotte. Lowe considered him for the managers position before he appointed Burley and has kept in touch with him. When it became clear Lowe would be in charge again he contacted Wotte again but he was not interested in the manager position anymore. Wotte the recommended Poortvliet. And about him being out of his depth, I don't think so. Like I said, the results are not great but considering the squad he has I don't think anyone could do better (and I don't believe that a British manager would have gotten a better squad). I just hope he learns better English quickly because if there's one thing I can't stand is very bad English with a Dutch accent.

First of all make that first division (or second tier). Secondly, I agree he must have been very excited, not very often does a second tier manager from the Netherlands get a chance abroad (except for in the Belgian leagues). But that doesn't mean he'll be "lost". He has also had a good "mentor" in that sense in Hockaday who must know all the players, including the former academy ones, very well. So even if he didn't know the league very well before he came here he should know what he can expect from teams after the pre-season. I don't see how that should hamper him too much, if anything it depends on his skills to adapt a Dutch style of play to the English leagues. Which to my opinion, isn't going great, but it isn't goin to badly either. Especially considering the amount of money and the resulting team available. Ow, and I'd heard of Poortvliet but being Dutch perhaps that doesn't really count.

I'll take your point about him not knowing much beforehand about the player we signed but even if Poortvliet (note the spelling) didn't recommend them I'm quite sure it wasn't Lowe that did. They were recommended by a good former youth trainer of Saints. Besides that, they main problem I had with your statement was about the being told to be included in the team. That's just total bull****. Also, get your facts straight about Poortvliet before shouting fact about everything.

I'm sure we can afford not to PAY him. The problem is he'll leave for free. On a more serious note, I wonder if he's fit yet after his injury. He's had almost no pre-season. I'd like to see him in the team, especially since we have no other left winger now that Holmes is out injured (except perhaps Surman). I'd be surprised if he didn't get a chance against Rotherham this week.
