Anyone listen to Radio 5 Live yesterday? The Chairman of Oldham was on saying how difficult is was to keep going especially when surrounded by lots of Prem clubs. They even offered a £1 entrance fee for one game last season and were 2,000 short of their 11,500 capacity Apparently their playing budget is under £2m for the year compared to quote ...'Southampton at £8m or so...although this really reflects the fact that they average over 20,000 for their home games'...

Any one remember going down to Dock Gate 10 to check out the cars going thro the Auction Site on a Weds or Saturday? Always remember the smell of the flour making at the Ranks Mill next door, the fry ups in the Auction Canteen and the Car Dealers doing the rounds. Bob Charles, the ex Saints Goalie, was always in evidence (he had a second hand car site in Swaythling) Only bought I car there (a Triumph Herald) only to find the chassis riddled with rust. My mates Dad went down to 'have words' with the Auction owners' They thought he was a copper and paid for most of the repair costs!!

First of all I am not trying to defend those 'supporters' who were hauled before the Courts following the Pompey Cup Tie. Also I do know all the details of their crimes or convictions. However it does occur to me that they were not actually involved in hurting anyone (as far as I am aware) In comparison, according to headlines in the Liverpool Echo, several Liverpool fans have been found guilty of quite a serious attack on a Man Utd fan and yet appear to have been let off without incarceration The Law doesn't appear to be consistent here

Like some of the other posters I have suffered from back and neck problems for several years (arthritic deterioration of the respective joints) Have been to both Chiros and Physios Prefer latter as my GP suggested that Chiropratic work on soft tissue, especially in the neck (ie in close proximity to blood vessels to the brain) is rather chancey However you pays your money and takes your chance. My latest physio is the best I have been to a) his Dad was a GP and he studied general medicine before specialising b) he actually treats my own GP c) hey explains what he is doing d) he has never once suggested seeing me for a course of treatments ie maximising revenue e) he generally recommends specific exercises relevant to the symptoms presented Best of luck!!

Anyone going tomorrow night? Will be interesting to see how many triallists from Saturday play. It will be a couple of League's step up for the youngsters from Winchester to Havant. Apparently Pompey with all their Championship stars (!!!!) struggled on Saturday in their 2-1 win at Havant, so hope for a decent display from lour youngsters. Think last time Saints (Res) played at Havant some nob set fire to the Saints GK's gloves in the back of the net!!

How on earth Prescott got to one of the highest levels in British Govt is beyond me Have met him on a couple of occasions. To be fair not a bad bloke to have a drink with I suppose but his grasp of English and basic facts were astonishingly poor Good knows what representatives of foreign companies must have made of him. Bit of useless info here. Bearing in mind his 'preferences' in life, I am sorry to say that many years ago (prior to Gary Glitter) I bought one of his records when he recorded under the name Paul Raven. Don't have it any more but remember, at the time, thinking it was quite good. Quite soulful.

Ironically only met the bloke about 3 or 4 times First couple of time I thought he wasn't the real deal. In fact a bit odd. Subsequently invited to the Board room with a potential sponsor, who he treated v well, and again in a Hotel at an away game when Burley was the Manager. We had a good chat about the club and he came across as an informed and passionate person. However heard that he is not well thought of in the Lymington area despite his support of local charities. Like the Curates Egg, he is good in parts.

I was stood in the lower Chocolate Box when Dave Webb passed the ball up the line to Martin Chivers who ran from just inside the Charlton half to cross for Painey to sweep home Webby's pass went over the line so we should have lost the extra point for the win. However luck was on our side and we won our last home game of the season and got a win and 2 draws from the three remaining away games to gain our first ever promotion to the top Level

Also some suggestion that workers at St Marys ill no longer get free parking. Will have to come out of their wages, on match days at least

I sat next to Norman Dean at a do recently. Tony Godfrey was also at our table (a 5'8'' ex Saints keeper)

He also had some 'interesting' games against the Pompey LB by the name of Roy Lunnis who was, at the time, a monster at well over 6 foot. Painey was far too skilful for him. Also remember a Christmas game v Bolton. Their left back was Sid Farrimond. Him and Painey had been having a right go from the off. Painey got a sly dig at him and Farrimond retaliated by throwing a handful of mud at Painey. Farrimond got sent off (a most unusual event in those days) and Saints went on to win (5-1 I think) The only LB that ever got the better of Painey was Ray Wilson originally at Huddersfield then Everton. Wilson was in the 1966 World Cup squad. Painey also had a Greengrocers for a while in Shirley and was a local Councillor

Terry Paine once scored a hat trick for England v N Ireland (won 8-3) V tricky and skilful player (with a bit of a nasty streak) and not liked much by fellow Saints players He had a deputy by the name of Dave Chadwick who wasnt a bad player but couldnt dislodge Painey or John Sydenham on either wing

TBF The 'Modern Era' thing is subjective but based on the fact that there are unlikely to be too many fans of either side who are alive and supporting their respective teams for + 50 years
