Of course, but most of them were probably scored by players who had quite a few chances in each game, and were on the pitch for 90+ mins. each time. Nigel Adkins says we have a squad and doesn't differenciate between " starters", and those who "start" on the bench. I thought it was pretty impressive for Lee Holmes to come on in the last 5 minutes and score (v. Watford), but I can't recall (if ever) we've had a game where TWO central defenders scored, and neither was on the pitch for more than 45 mins.?

I do know,(though don't recall everything word for word)..but it made me angry and I didn't sit and listen to his diatribe for the length of his programme. I objected to his attitude about our (then) impending bankruptcy! Making such comments on local TV was a bit beyond the pale for my liking. Is he "joking " about Pompey now (?) ..Is he STILL a director, or has the " manifold regimes " at Fratton in recent years brushed him aside now?.

Having taught English to non-native speakers from every continent for the last few decades, I can guess that Lee may understand some basic domestic langauge OK - (Japanese have good access to the " American version " of English via TV / media), though it doesn't comeover so well when they speak. I'm glad to see that we have invested in a translator for Lee , (or should I say " Chung" ) - I just hope the translator is a football fan - that will help. In every profession there is a vocabulary of technical terminology, and it's surely no different in football. Offside means offside in every language! It'll take time for Chung to do his own press conferences, but after watching his goal on Saturday, I'd say that his type of football - speaks for itself !

....and left-footed. too!

well ...almost Vectis. I make it Lambert got only ONE sub.goal (Swindon (A) in L. Cup game. It was 10 - until yesterday. the latest two were, of course ..Aaron Martin and T. Lee.
-
Brighton ..remember them ? ..promoted with us last season... scored THREE own goals... in their 1-6 FA Cup annihilation at Anfield . hahahahahaha hi there Gus !
-
He had ONE good season in the four he had at Posh. Strikers are dependant on the service they get and the other players around them. Because someone moves clubs they don't automatically take their success with them...eg.. Andy Carroll.

Billy did very well in his career - both before and after his time at Sheff.Utd. where he scored 12 times in 51 games, but it should be remembered that part of that time James Beattie was quite successful in his time at Sheff Utd. and was their first choice striker. During the loan period and subsequent signing Billy was very good at Donnie and his strike rate was up around 0.50% goals per game (an excellent figure). Overall, Billy has scored 120 goals in 263 games, a good figure in itself (even allowing for the low water mark in his time at Bramall Lane). Donnie were a half-reasonable side last season, but this season really have dropped down a lot. However, he was good enough to score against Saints when Donnie took 3 points off us in December. He hasn't been subject to the Saints training regime for very long and can hardly be expected to look like " the finished article " in only a few games. If he's going to be any real good this season, we should see some results by Easter time.

Really nice to watch, and what about those goal celebrations ! one or two goals reminded me of ..Marian Pahars.... most of the rest, are straight out of the Matt Le Tissier Book of Incredible Goals.
-
haven't seen any stats. on this one, BUT unless I'm mistaken we've had TWELVE goals scored by players coming on as sub.(in various games) this season. I know it's not often you hear of TWO subs. scoring in the same game.
-
Given the obvious factor of injuries etc, Donnie's side doesn't look THAT bad on paper, but of course they don't play games on paper... I just think he's been trained poorly and hasn't got upto speed with a top of the table side yet, but agree he looks the part..though maybe not for 90 mins. yet I think NA will give both him and Lee 45 mins. each for a few games to see who develops best ....

Not " photographer of the year" standard, but good enough to celebrate for . Be nice to see one of those every home game !
-
TBH I didn't wait around to listen to all of his blah hah, but his ear-to ear grin when he began speaking and his condescending manner was enough thank you ! for me..it felt like being forced to listen to someone denegrate someone you love ....and have no re-course to reply! If he has to continue reporting on the fate of his " beloved club", as long as we did with ours ..perhaps he'll cultivate a little humility...and a public apology to SFC / Saints fans on his TV prog. wouldn't be out of place either....

well I know the members of your fan club is a bit thin on the ground Turkish, here I am agreeing with you AGAIN. I don't want Pom*ey to go down out of spite, but on results, although somehow I don't think the FA has finished with them by canning them with only - 10 points either. IF ..they survive, let them struggle at the bottom next season, and see if they are worth their spot on results alone. Personally, I doubt it. I've never liked /disliked Coventry or Donnie, but they seemed to have reached the bottom of the barrel and the likes of Charlton and one (or both) of the Sheffields would grace the Championship better next season. so my third team is between; Forest (who I have a soft spot for - but TEN home defeats already doesn't auger well for them) and Millwall who are beginning to implode badly, but my outside tip for the drop is... PETERBOROUGH. The only thing POSH about them is their "nickname ". There is an arrogance about the Peterboro' manager that (perhaps) his famous father maybe entitled to express, but not the manager of such a poor side. Last seasons totally undeserved promotion was a one season wonder put down to one person - Machail Smith - and the abysmal showing of Huddersfield in the play-off final, after a brilliant season. What ever possessed the Hudd's Board to sack Lee Clark...is beyond me! He was a good manager of a VG team.. that just hasn't peaked yet . So for me . .it's Coventry, Donnie and Peterboro ! Mind you ...If we are in the Premiership by then, I couldn't care less ! Honestly speaking I'd be more concerned at WHO comes down from the Prem. There are a few sides who survive year after year and getting rid of a Fulham, or a WBA would leave a breathing space at the bottom end, next season in case we don't finish top 5. ( joke everyone ..joke!) Not totally sure, but I don't think that ALL three promoted sides have all survived more than one Prem. season...so far (?) Usually one ..and occasionally two... come straight back down rather quickly. This season it could be QPR - no great loss to the Prem.

Thanks for the positive input and comment on my post Victor, but I have to say that generally speaking a lot of my impressions of "other clubs " are based on the players they have (good or otherwise) ..and not always the results, the attitude of the manager in the media, and the behaviour of their fans. At present Pompey (IMO) don't rate very highly on any scale of those items. Southampton has been described (in good times and bad)often by former players - as a nice family club and a nice place to be, and neutrals I meet (in Sweden) often recall the era of MLT and the Svenssons with polite comments. There has (in my 50 years as a fan) always been a " friendly rivalry " between the clubs, sometimes sadly degrading itself into fan violence but I generally look at their results (after those of Eastleigh and Salisbury)...but I'm not overly bothered by them, or their results except when we play them. Several years back, when our fate hung in the balance ...I was unfortunate enough to be visiting So'ton at the time that our fortunes were at their worst and Marcus Liebherr was waiting in the wings to bale us out with a little of his fortune. The most degrading aspect of this was the sight of F. Dinage going on local TV (supposedly a neutral medium) and denegrating Saints' in their worst hour. At that point in time, any respect I may have had for PFC (or Dinage) went down the drain when he used his public position as TV person, and Pompey director - to abuse SFC. I cannot picture that even Rupert Lowe (and certainly not Nicola Cortese) would have gone public with such comments ! Sorry Victor, my halo has gone to the cleaners this week - along with those poor so*s who supplied PFC with services that they likely will never get paid for. BTW - the comment you put in the above about calling Pompey "cheats " wasn't in my original contribution. I never said that part. Mind you, I wasn't part of the Administration team that baled them out last time ..and still didn't find out where all of the £130 million went to......

pity on you guys you don't have a copy of In that Number. The definitive history of Saints 1946 - 2003. A enormous volume and real masterpiece for anyone who relishes the history of SFC. David Bull did most of the editing of the book, based on an enormous amount of info. from the authors Duncan Holley and Gary Chalk, and you can see him ..(together with Duncan) on a portion of the Saints Millenium video..from a few years back. Is it available on DVD now, I wonder...? I haven't met David personally, but have corresponded with him a bit, and his dry wit even comes over in his writing. " Pompey people" like Fred Dinage used his position as Pompey director and TV personality -( although I think he was totally lacking in that area) ..to abuse Saints day after day on local TV ..when we were in the sh*t a few years ago. So am I sorry for them now?......NO ! .. The best that can happen is that some other idiot invests in the club... and they survive... to get pounded even more at the bottom of the Championship next season..whilst WE are in the Premiership.
-
do we still have this ridiculous thread? ..very soon we'll have one for the number of LEAGUES we are above Pompey !
-
nice win, but at 3-0 up I was beginning to wonder if a forward would ever score ?...Lee obliged !

Butterfield Signs New One Year Deal
david in sweden replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
not a bad deal. of course, Richardson is first-choice but Butterfield seldom let's the side down when called upon. He has experience and is not too old to be a part-season player. -
Sadly, He is really "on his last legs", (and the ones he has have been operated on several times). Any club that signs him will be buying his reputation rather than the ace player he was at Arsenal (forget his West Ham days). I'd be surprsied if he stayed fit for half-a-season now. Pity!... at his best he was top class - especially for Sweden.
-
it's was a joke, but he looks "world-class " compared to many others in the Championship - don't you think ?
-
Yago Falqué - just remembered we have him on loan
david in sweden replied to Paul Chuckle's topic in The Saints
I think most sides tend NOT to loan out their best players, do they? ...sometimes giving a chance for a fringe player to get games (as we have with Dickson and Holmes), or to help a player get back to form after injury or, on other occasions it seems the best loans are those where the player doesn't get along with his (former)manager. ala... Chaplow at Preston, (Darren F. must be kicking himself over that one) and Lennon (Celtic) didn't see the qualities in Jos Hooiveld that NA obviously did. Frankly, I'm quite surprised the figure you quote is only 1 in 3....it's not as if we 're looking to sign most of them permanently !
